Penny wise and pound foolish

I feel the need to respond to Mary Jane Boucher’s letter in the Warwick Beacon dated Feb. 6. I cannot argue with her ideal of saving money; she is correct about the pennies adding up, “A penny earned.” I have one I am fond of also. A wise old adage, “Penny wise and pound foolish.” I pointed out the spending of millions, usually without much challenge, by the city – out-of-control pensions, and overtime. I also mentioned the growing loss of tax revenue from the growing airport – more millions. Mary Jane did not concede those points in her letter. She only insinuated that I was not concerned about spending. I commented on bottles of water. Her reply is, in fact, correct. It is pennies involved. I also point out there is no monetary loss. The center makes a profit on each bottle. “Penny wise and pound foolish” applies very well here.

The City Council approves of the spending of millions, yet a few councilmen stage a dog and pony show about pennies being spent for a Senior Center. I might also point out my name is Walter, not Joseph.

The pensions are not out of control, there is no over time out of control. People just don't understand how things work. They just throw out sensational numbers, they spew hatred against public and city employees, they do not provide any form of examples or evidence. Majority of the claims written on here are just hear say.

Fact: The airport is buying some homes. Some folks may stay in Warwick and simply buy one of the homes vacant and for sale. The economic boom from the businesses remains to be seen compared to any potential loss in property taxes. Time will tell.
