Pet adoption hosted by Washington Trust as part of 215th birthday celebration

The Washington Trust Company will celebrate its 215th birthday by hosting a number of events this Saturday. The bank will celebrate not only its birthday but also the 225th anniversary of when George Washington last visited Rhode Island.

Washington was a dog-lover, who raised many breeds over the course of his lifetime. To recognize his love for animals, the bank has paired up with three area pet adoption centers to host adoption events on Saturday with The East Greenwich Animal Protection League at Washington Trust’s branch at 236 Centerville Road in Warwick, The Animal Rescue League of Rhode Island at Washington Trust’s Sweet Meadows branch at 20 Point Judith Road in Narragansett, and The Providence Animal Rescue League at Washington Trust’s Rumford branch at 330 Newport Avenue in Rumford.

Though there will be pets for families to meet, it is unlikely that the families will go home with a pet that day, according to Tony Nunes, the bank’s social media and public relations officer. He said the event would give families the opportunity to meet some of the pets available for adoption and provide information about beginning the process of adoption.

Not only is the bank hosting a pet adoption event on Saturday, but it has also invited nearly 200 customers who share the bank’s birthday as guests of a special birthday celebration at McCoy Stadium. The customers will be treated to a pre-game barbeque; George Washington will throw the first pitch and the crowd will watch and cheer on the PawSox as they play against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.

As if these two events weren’t enough, the Washington Trust Bank sponsored the Rhode Island Historical Society’s “Washington Returns to Providence” event at the John Brown House Museum in Providence last Saturday. The event included walking tours, family activities and a toast to Washington played by Mount Vernon’s official historical portrayer.
