Pilgrim High School will host their first annual Run for Remembrance in honor of Bella DiPalma and Elanna Zuller, two Pilgrim students killed in a tragic car accident last August.
The 5K run will be held June 2 at Warwick City Park, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. The run is the first 5K organized by the Pilgrim High School Class of 2014.
Proceeds from the run will benefit both the Elanna Zuller and Bella DiPalma memorial funds, as well as the Pilgrim Class of 2014.
Pilgrim teachers and advisers for the Class of 2014, Traci McGuire and Sara Bloodworth, have been instrumental in organizing the event. Both McGuire and Bloodworth are pleased with the great response from local businesses. Already Cardi’s Furniture, Dan’s Music and Eternal Beauty Salon and Spa, among other community business, have announced their sponsorship.
The Rhode Island State Police have also made contributions.
Unfortunately, McGuire and Bloodworth said a few conflicts have cropped up concerning the date of the event, as many high school juniors won’t be able to attend due to SAT testing. Similarly, the Pilgrim High School Track and Field team will be absent from the 5K because they must participate in a previously scheduled tournament on the same day.
In the future, McGuire and Bloodworth hope to make the Run for Remembrance an annual event. Next year, they hope to minimize conflicts by scheduling the run on a Sunday rather than a Saturday. In the event another tragedy takes place, the Run for Remembrance will be amended to benefit the new memorial funds.
The 5K run is $15 for Pilgrim students, $20 for Pilgrim teachers, $20 for public participants, and $25 for those who register on the day of the event. Twenty-five percent of the money raised from the event will be going to both the Elanna Zuller and Bella DiPalma memorial funds, with the remaining 50 percent benefiting the Pilgrim High School Class of 2014. Online registration for the Run for Remembrance is available at http://racewire.com/register.php?id=1639.
