Pilgrim alum Sean Furney clipped Dayton’s wings Saturday, as the righty hurled a complete game two-hitter to guide Rhode Island to its first conference win of the season, shutting out the Flyers 4-0.

The senior ace faced the minimum number of batters while not allowing a single Flyer baserunner to get into scoring position, in addition to chalking up four strikeouts.

Furney’s gem helped extend his current scoreless streak to 23.2 innings, dating back to a March 16 contest against Winthrop that saw him surrender a first-inning home run before settling down to strike out five Eagles over eight innings to help the Rams to a 4-2 win.

He’s also had to clear some room on his mantle for some personal hardware; the Atlantic 10 Conference honored last weekend’s performance by naming Furney its pitcher of the week.

Vescera off to fast start

Meanwhile, beyond New England’s borders, Hendricken graduate Alex Vescera has been getting the job done at the plate and on the mound for Franklin and Marshall so far in 2013.

He currently leads the Diplomats with eight doubles, while driving home 18 runs and batting at a .324 clip.

When he isn’t scooping up ground balls from his usual perch at shortstop, Vescera works out of the bullpen, having made six relief appearances to-date and picking up a team-high four saves.

Courcy leading the way

For any fledgling team, veteran leadership is a precious commodity, and Kim Courcy is providing just that for the women’s lacrosse program at Massachusetts Maritime, which is in the midst of its second season as a varsity-level squad.

The Warwick Vets alumna is one of the three captains for the Buccaneers, and the senior midfielder has made it abundantly clear that she chooses to lead by example, leading the team in several statistical categories.

Courcy tops the team charts in goals (16), draw controls (25) and ground balls (21), proving that she is equally adept in both the offensive and defensive aspects of the game.

In addition to having a roster mostly comprised of underclassmen, Mass. Maritime has had to deal with the additional adversity of having its first three games postponed due to less-than-cooperative weather.

The Buccaneers finally took to the field on March 14, dropping a 22-9 decision to UMass-Dartmouth. The opening setback was then followed by three more defeats before Mass. Maritime embarked on its current two-game winning streak.
