Pilgrim swim team wins Injury Fund event

The league season isn’t yet underway but the Pilgrim girls’ swimming team has already made a splash.

The Pats won the preseason Injury Fund carnival on Monday at Park View Middle School. It’s the first time in many years that the Pats have won the annual event.

“To be honest, I was not expecting to win it,” said head coach Nisa San Giovanni. “We knew we had a decent team coming in, and the girls swam really well.”

The event featured five teams – Pilgrim, Toll Gate, Warwick Vets, Cranston West and North Providence. Teams competed in six relay events, and the Pats won four of the six.

It started with a one-mile relay featuring eight swimmers going 50 meters each. The Pats stormed to a victory.

“We won that going away,” San Giovanni said. “The girls were really excited and they just kept rolling.”

Returning swimmers Taylor Ryan, McKenzie Caron, Casey Adams and Brenna Reeves led the way for the Pats, with newcomers Sophia Caracuzzo and Abby Slater also coming up big in their high school debuts.

’Canes hold off Titans

Toll Gate beat Pilgrim in a city rivalry game last week, but in another one on Tuesday, it was Warwick Vets who had the upper hand. The ’Canes beat Toll Gate 38-34 in a non-league match-up.

Vets built a 30-12 halftime lead before going cold in the second half.

The Titans out-scored Vets 22-8 after the break, but the ’Canes managed to hold on for the victory.

Lauren Almonte had a game-high 10 points to lead Vets and Casey Bennett added nine.

Laura McGuire scored nine to lead the charge for Toll Gate.
