Pilgrim volleyball climbing the ranks

Posted

The Division II-South volleyball race held form for much of the first half of the season, with two top teams emerging and a middle of the pack following them.

Pilgrim may be crashing the party.

Facing a second-place Cranston West team whose only loss was to unbeaten East Greenwich, the Pats delivered an eye-popping sweep last Tuesday. They followed it up with a victory over Narragansett on Thursday to move to 5-3.

Pilgrim is now tied with Cranston West and West Warwick for third place in D-II-South, behind 8-0 East Greenwich and 6-2 Cranston East.

The Pats have won four matches in a row, after starting the season 1-3. They will open the second half of the season on Wednesday when they host Westerly. On Friday, they’ll visit Toll Gate.

Titans making noise, too

Toll Gate volleyball is not quite at Pilgrim’s pace, but the Titans had a big stretch, as well. After picking up their first win of the season on Sept. 26, the Titans outlasted Westerly 3-2 on Wednesday. Jamie Hopgood delivered 14 kills to lead the way, while Faith Porter notched eight digs and six aces. The Titans won the first two games, lost the next two, but came back to win the decisive fifth game 15-13.

Toll Gate improved to 2-6. It was set to play Cranston East on Monday, with results unavailable at press time.

’Canes holding steady

The Warwick Vets boys’ soccer team got off to a 4-1 start this season. After losing three in a row, the ’Canes got back on the positive side of the ledger with a 4-1 victory over Tiverton on Friday.

Nikone Soupharath and Dan Lobato each had two goals to lead the ’Canes over the Tigers. Ryan Costa made seven saves.

The win moved Vets to 5-4, good for sixth place in Division III.

Holmes tallies two in All-Star Game

Toll Gate’s Kelsey Holmes scored two of the three goals as the Division II-South team beat the North 3-0 in the annual Rhode Island Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Star Game on Saturday. Toll Gate’s Breana Coleman, as well as players from Pilgrim and Vets also competed.
