Pilgrim's Guirguis qualifies for singles tourney

The main draw for the girls’ tennis state tournament was announced last week and Pilgrim’s Maria Guirguis was one of eight qualifiers out of Division III.
Guirguis, the No. 1 player for the Pats, is the No. 5 seed from D-III. She opens up play in the first round on Friday at 3 p.m. against Sarah Barone. Barone is the No. 1 player on Wheeler and the No. 7 seed out of D-I.
Overall, 32 players qualified for the tournament.
Pilgrim has compiled a 9-2 record in D-III so far this year, with Guirguis leading the way.

Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge set

On October 22, the Knights of Columbus will be holding their “Soccer Challenge” at Wilson Park in Wickford.
The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is a competition designed for players to demonstrate the most basic soccer skill – the penalty kick. Open to all boys and girls in, ages 10-14, the event will have each player take 15 shots at the goal from the penalty line (12 yards from the goal). Winners progress to the district, regional, state and international levels.
The event will start at 10 a.m. and run through 1 p.m. Participants are required to provide proof of age and parental consent.
