Players bringing 'Philadelphia Story' to Barker Playhouse stage

On Jan. 30, The Players will present “The Philadelphia Story.”

This timeless play that was made into a Hollywood classic – the 1940 film starred Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart – tells the story of coal fortune heiress Tracy Lord, who must choose from amongst three suitors during the course of the play.

As one might expect, wedding bells ring by the end of the show, but the performance is actually a sort of rehearsal. Lauren Odenwalder, who stars as Tracy Lord, and Alex Duckworth, playing one of the three possible suitors, are, in the real world, busy planning their own wedding for June of this year. The question is, will they end up together at the end of the play? You’ll have to come down to the Barker Playhouse to find out.

“We’re relishing this chance to play opposite each other,” Duckworth said. “When you act with someone that you share every other aspect of your life with, there’s an intimacy there that only enhances the performance. Needless to say, our repartee and connection in the play is not far from the truth.”

Art imitating life – and in June life imitating art.

“The Philadelphia Story” is being presented on Jan. 30-31, Feb. 1 and Feb. 6-8 at the Barker Playhouse, located at 400 Benefit St. in Providence.
