Poerty writing series starts at Warwick Library

The Ocean State Poets will provide instruction on the writing of poems in a series starting in September at the Warwick Public Library.

On Wednesdays, Sept. 10 and 24 and Oct. 8, learn how to write haiku. This short style of Japanese poetry uses 17 syllables to express simple but striking experiences. Discover how to use detail, rhythm and tone to create haiku. Bring paper and pen.

On Wednesdays, Oct. 22 and Nov. 5 and 19, explore how to compose poems using ekphrasis – a vivid description of artwork. Ekphrasis appears as far back as Homer’s “The Illiad.” Find out how to use metaphor and allusion to write ekphrasis. Bring paper and pen.

On Wednesday, Dec. 3, read your poems at the Dynamic Hour of Poetry. Join poets form across the state for a spirited hour of imaginative, exciting and honest writing. All sessions start at 7 p.m.

Sign up online at warwicklibrary.org or call 739-5440, x4. For more information, call 739-5440, x221. The Library is located at 600 Sandy Lane. This event is free and open to all.
