Poet and author to talk about Penikese Leper Hospital

Join Eve Rifkah, poet and author of “Outcasts – The Penikese Island Leper Hospital 1905-1921,” for a talk and reading at Warwick Public Library on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.

In 1905, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts established a colony for lepers on a tiny island 14 miles off New Bedford. “Outcasts” follows the stories of the patients and staff who were confined to Penikese Island, away from their families and the rest of the world.

You can see the patients, the buildings and the grave markers they left behind and hear portraits of their lives and the strength, kindness and courage of people faced with a seemingly hopeless situation in an indifferent world.

Eve Rifkah is an adjunct professor of English at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts.

Register online at warwicklibrary.org or call 739-5440 extension 4. For more information, call 739-5440 extension 221. The Library is located at 600 Sandy Lane.

This event is free and open to all.
