UNHAPPY RETURNS

Loss prevention at the Kohl’s store in Rhode Island Mall told police they were unsuccessful in detaining a man and a woman who took some watches from their store without paying for them because, by the time they caught up with them outside, they had already got into a car and driven off. The said they called police when they saw the same car return to the parking lot where the driver got out and went back inside the store to return the stolen watches for cash credit. He was just completing that transaction when police arrived and arrested him. Police said they asked him if he knew the watches were stolen and he initially said they were a gift he was returning but eventually admitted he was returning them for his sister, who was waiting for him in the car outside. Police charged the driver, identified as Stephen Rogers, 31, of 69 North Pleasant St., West Warwick, with attempting to get money under false pretenses. He was later released with a summons. Other officers arrested the man and woman in the car, who they said stole the watches. Loss prevention said they had video of that theft that showed Mark Torres, 55, of 1735 Main St. in West Warwick, and Kerry Colvin, 39, 736 Washington St. in Coventry, actually taking the watches. Police said they also learned that Mark Torres had a warrant out for failure to appear for a suspended license case. They said Colvin had three active Superior Court warrants but complained of a heart condition and Warwick Rescue was called to evaluate her. Torres was remanded to the ACI.

MISSING COPPER

A man who was keeping an eye on a Nausauket Avenue house that belongs to a Florida bank called police on Feb. 10 to report that he found the copper tubing for the baseboard heating on the first floor of the house had been stripped and removed. He said the tubing was worth $1,200 and he had no idea when that occurred but said he last checked on Jan. 15. No suspects or witnesses.

MISSING RINGS

A Warwick woman told police she had been working out at Planet Fitness on Warwick Avenue around 8 a.m. on Feb. 11 and had left the treadmill for a few minutes around 9 a.m. She said she returned to the machine and saw that a wedding band, engagement ring and watch she left on the machine were missing. She said the management told her no one turned in the rings or the watch and there was no surveillance of the treadmill. She said the Movado watch was platinum with diamonds and was worth $1,500. She said the rings were worth about $6,500 and none of the items were engraved. No suspect or witnesses.

RAMPING UP

An employee for the Craft Beer Guild of Rhode Island on Metro Center Boulevard told police he went back to the office for some reason on Feb. 11 when he saw a pickup truck behind the company with two diamond steel truck ramps worth $1,800 loaded onto the back of the truck. He told police he followed the pickup truck as it drove away but lost sight of the truck near Jefferson Boulevard. He called police and waited at the business while other officers looked for the plate number for the pickup, which they had traced back to 109 Bend St. in Warwick. Police responded to Bend Street and waited. When the truck pulled into the driveway, police pulled in behind it. Officer Manuel Pacheco said he approached the truck and the driver put up his arms and said, “You got me. I did it.” Pacheco said the man explained that he was out of work and needed money. He said his wife, who was with him at the time, told him not to take the ramps but he did anyway. He said he just happened to see the ramps and decided to take them. Patrick S. Ormerod, 47, of 109 Bend St., was charged with felony larceny and later released on $1,500 surety bail.

DRUG RAID

Members of the Warwick Police Department’s Special Operations Group and Warwick Police SWAT team conducted an early afternoon drug raid in the Oakland Beach section of the city on Feb 13. During the raid at a Seminole St. home, crack cocaine, marijuana and cash were seized. Arrested at the scene was James Gauthier, 61, of Warwick. Gauthier, who will be facing two counts of manufacturing a controlled substance, is being held pending formal arraignment.

SHOPLIFTING

Jennifer C. Natareno-Rich, 21, of 100 Broad St. in Providence, was charged with shoplifting at the JC Penney store in Warwick Mall on Feb. 11. Loss prevention told police they saw the suspect conceal a box of fragrance and then leave the store without paying for it. They said the perfume was worth $31.03 and gave police a receipt and the video surveillance of the incident. Natareno-Rich was later released with a summons for District Court.

Officer Walter Larson reported that he went to the Victoria’s Secret store in Warwick Mall on Feb. 5 to take a shoplifting suspect into custody. The store manager said they saw the suspect in prior thefts come into the store that day and detained her for police. Larson said she admitted she stole 50 pairs of panties from the store on Jan. 26 and sold them to a man for $2 each. She said he takes them to Puerto Rico and sells them for much more but presumably less than the $36 a pair that the store charges. She also admitted stealing six pairs of jogging pants from the store. Melissa Moreta, 19, of 87 Rounds Ave., Providence, was charged with shoplifting and released with a summons.

Audrey J. Hudson, 19, of 1 Valley View Dr., Cranston, was charged with shoplifting at JC Penney on Feb. 10. Loss prevention at the store told police she concealed $82 worth of cosmetics before she left the store without paying for them. She was later released with a summons.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer James Petit reported he was dispatched to Airport and Post Roads around 12:15 a.m. for someone apparently asleep in the intersection with the vehicle in drive and his foot on the brake. He said he and another officer arrived around the same time and he put the Chevy Silverado in “park” while the other officer reached in and removed the keys. He said the driver appeared to be drunk and smelled of alcohol but claimed he only had “two beers” when he left work. He said the driver agreed to do a field sobriety test but did not do well. Petit said he read the man his rights and took him to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. Christopher M. Deangelis, 35, of 255 Sandy Lane, Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.
