FIRE

On Feb. 22 at 7:51 a.m., Officer Raymond Cox was dispatched to 2157 West Shore Road, Fred’s AutoHaus, for the report of a fire. When he observed a large plume of smoke emanating from the garage as well as flames emanating from the corner of the building, Cox requested additional units to the location. Cox stopped traffic on West Shore Rd. eastbound in the area of Horse Neck, while Officer Osvaldo Monteiro responded and stopped traffic on West Shore Road westbound in the area of Oakland Beach. Cox obtained a written statement from one of the reporting parties, who lives across the street from Fred’s Auto House. The man said he was doing laundry at 7:30 that morning when he heard a crashing noise, which was the glass falling out of the window due to the heat. He said he looked out and saw that the garage was on fire and contacted 911. When he contacted 911, he was advised that units were already en route. Before clearing the scene, Cox remained with fire apparatus and fire investigators, who determined there was no evidence to suspect anything criminal in nature with regards to the fire.

VEHICLE LARCENIES

Officer Tammy Mello was dispatched to Rustic Way on Feb. 24 in reference to a larceny from a motor vehicle. Mello met with a man who said sometime over the weekend someone broke into his vehicle and stole several tools, including a Kobal set of new tools valued at $140, one Craftsman set of wrenches valued at $50, and one retractable knife valued at $4 for a total value of $194. The man also said he found a coat hanger that was fully extended, which he believes was used to gain entrance into the vehicle.

Officer Rose Michel responded to Fairfax Drive at approximately 1:57 a.m. on Feb. 19 to assist another officer in a larceny from a motor vehicle. She said the officer located a vehicle with its driver side window smashed. The vehicle owner provided a written statement, where he indicated $3 in change was missing from the center console and wished to press charges. Damages were estimated at $500. Michel spoke with a subject who was having difficulty with their vehicle stuck in the snow but said they did not hear a window smash or see any suspicious subjects in the area. No suspects.

Officer Nicholas DiNardo responded to Warwick Police Department headquarters at approximately 1:48 p.m. on Feb. 20 where he met with a woman for the report of a larceny. She said her keys were taken from her locker at the YMCA on Centerville Road and the following items were stolen: $250 in U.S. currency; two hearing aids valued at approximately $4,000; one pair of eyeglasses valued at approximately $800; one cell phone valued at approximately $65; one R.I. driver’s license; multiple credit cards, including an ATM card, and one Centerville Bank checkbook. The woman said she notified her banking institutions and credit card companies regarding the theft. No suspects.

Officer Jason Brodeur was dispatched to Briarwood Meadows on Quaker Lane at approximately 3:21 p.m. on Feb. 24 for the report of a larceny of tires and rims. Brodeur met with a man who said he parked his vehicle around 4 p.m. on Feb. 23. When the man came out to his vehicle the next day at about 2:45 p.m., he noticed that all four rims and tires had been stolen. The man was informed by maintenance of the complex that he noticed the tires and rims were gone around 7 a.m. Brodeur said there are no external cameras in the area. The man provided a written statement and the case was forwarded to the Detective Division. No suspects.

COCAINE

Officer Stephen Major was dispatched to the loss prevention office at Macy’s department store at Warwick Mall at approximately 8:29 p.m. on Feb. 23 in reference to a shoplifter in custody. Major met with loss prevention, who said they observed a male enter the men’s department carrying a Game Stop plastic bag, which appeared to have a booster insert. The man selected two Nautica jackets totaling $276 and concealed them in the bag, passed all points of purchase and made no attempt to pay. He was stopped outside of the store by loss prevention was escorted back inside where police were called. Kevin Sandoval, 20, of 825 Pontiac Ave., Apt. 1720, Cranston, was handcuffed and a search revealed he had approximately two grams of white powder cocaine in his front pocket in a small glassene baggie, which later field tested positive for cocaine at Warwick police headquarters. Sandoval also possessed less than one ounce of marijuana in another small glassene baggie that later field-tested positive. Sandoval was transported to police headquarters, where he was jailed and processed without incident. He was charged with shoplifting, shoplifting implements of concealment, possession of cocaine, and possession of marijuana one ounce or less 18 years or older, and was held for the next session of Third District Court.
