MINI-METH LAB

Warwick Police and federal DEA agents raided a room at the Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard Sunday morning after they got a tip about methamphetamine being made and sold in one of the rooms there. Police evacuated the motel.

The investigation led to the arrests of three adult males, all from Rhode Island. Charges include possession of methamphetamine and manufacturing of methamphetamine. Due to the ongoing investigation, the names of the three individuals are being withheld. As soon as it was learned that methamphetamine might be manufactured in the hotel room, the building was evacuated as a precaution. All three individuals were arraigned at the Gov. Philip W. Noel Courthouse on Monday.

TOOLS TAKEN

An employee of a Cranston equipment company told police he was getting a delivery from UPS on Graystone Street around 5:15 p.m. on March 9 when the driver told him there was someone lurking around a work van outside the office and asked if the man worked there. When he realized he did not work there he called police and had them on the lookout for a silver Trailblazer with a blanket covering the back window. Detectives recognized the SUV as a suspect in a number of recent larcenies and a detective was waiting for the Trailblazer when it pulled up to 56 Reed St. Police found a DeWalt folder and a Milwaukee saw from the work van inside the SUV. Paul R. Strumar, 50, of that address, was arrested and charged with felony receiving stolen goods and possession of controlled substances for the pills they found.

LAS VEGAS ACCENT

Around 7 p.m. on March 2, Officer Walter Larson reported pulling a car over on East Avenue. He said he nearly missed hitting it as it crossed the double yellow line. He said he pulled it over into the Walmart parking lot and noticed its expired registration. He said the driver was lethargic and slow to respond to questions and slurred his speech but denied he had been drinking. He said he saw a spoon on the floor of the car and noticed the man had an uneasy gait and appeared to be under the influence. He said the man explained his speech was slurred because he was from Las Vegas and they speak differently out there. Larson said he reminded the man that slurring was not a part of anyone’s accent and said he saw a blue-green chemical crust forming on the man’s mouth and that the man’s pupils were constricted. He said the driver agreed to a field sobriety test but began to be “going on the nod” as he spoke with him. He said the man failed the test and was taken to Kent Hospital, where he refused to take a chemical test. He said Trenton L. Woollard, 23, of 31 Cedar Pond Rd., Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal and driving an unregistered car. Larson said he also learned there was a warrant out for Woollard for passing counterfeit money. He was later released with a summons.

LARCENIES

A Cranston woman told police she was shopping at the DSW shoe store on Bald Hill Road on March 8 when she noticed that her iPhone was missing. She said she had an employee at the store attempt to call her phone but it came back as shut off. She said the location feature indicated that the phone was on Admiral St., between 80 and 348 Admiral, in Providence. A report was taken pending further investigation.

A Tennyson Road resident told police his pickup truck was parked outside his residence on March 9 and he noticed it had been broken into when he returned to it. He said some items were missing, including about 70 cents in change and a GPS unit worth about $60. No suspects or witnesses.

A North Smithfield man came into headquarters on March 10 and told police he had dinner at the 1149 Restaurant on Division Street the night before and returned to his car to find his backpack had been stolen from the vehicle. He said the backpack contained his Dell laptop computer and paperwork for his vehicle. No suspects or witnesses.

VANDALS

A Kiwanee Road resident told police someone broke the passenger side front window of his mini-van overnight on March 11 but nothing appeared to have been taken.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Sgt. Stephen Fernandez reported he went to a three-car accident at Main Avenue and Groveland around 6 p.m. on March 7. He said the driver he spoke with smelled of alcohol and admitted she had a “scorpion bowl” with dinner at The Islander restaurant. He said he gave her a field sobriety test and she failed it. She was taken to headquarters, where she refused to take a breath test. Bethany A. Negrotti, 42, of 212 Grandview Dr., Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer John Curley reported finding a car up on a snow bank with significant damage and another vehicle, a pickup truck, nearby with similar damage on Fairfax Drive around 12:50 a.m. on March 8. He said the driver of the pickup smelled of alcohol and told Curley he was not injured and did not need medical help. He said the man admitted to having two stouts at O’Rourke’s Bar and Grill. He said the driver failed a field sobriety test and blew a .147 blood alcohol content on the portable breath machine. He was taken to headquarters, where he refused a chemical test. Adam V. Croft, 28, of 22 Daboll Ct., Warwick, was charged with DUI, refusal and possession of marijuana and later released to a sober adult.

FAKE FIREFIGHTER?

Officer Mitchell Voyer reported that a private citizen called police to say he was blocking a drunk driver in the driveway of 101 Main Ave. around 9:50 p.m. on Feb. 28. He said he followed the man from the Shell station at 2211 West Shore Rd. Voyer said he arrived to find the driver behind the wheel of a 2015 Dodge Dart. He said the man behind the wheel appeared to be drunk but denied that he drank at all. Voyer said another officer pointed to a bottle of Jim Beam bourbon in the driver’s pocket. He said he asked the driver to get out and take a field sobriety test but he refused. He said a check revealed that the man’s license was suspended and that the man smelled strongly of alcohol. He said the man, identified as Leo Lyons, 53, was arrested for suspected DUI and taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. Voyer said he found a Firefighter ID card on the driver that had Lyons’ picture on it but said his name was “Lurrae Lupone” beneath the photo. Voyer said he would follow up on that the next day but for now, Lyons, of 101 Main Ave., was charged with DUI, refusal and having an open bottle of alcohol in the car, with a possible identity fraud charge later.

SHOPLIFTING

Two Providence women were charged with shoplifting at the Walmart store on Post Road on March 6 after loss prevention at the store told police they saw them conceal diet aids and makeup and leave the store without paying for the goods. Yasniry Olivo, 37, of 131 Adelaide Ave., and Mabel F. Tapia, 37, of 1163 Elmwood Ave., were later released with summonses for District Court.
