STOLEN WALLET

Officer Walter Larson was dispatched to the lobby at Warwick Police headquarters at approximately 6:21 p.m. on March 26 regarding a stolen wallet. Larson met with a woman who said that on March 25 between 2 and 2:30 p.m. her wallet had been stolen out of a shopping bag while she took her daughter to Pinkberry at Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Rd. She described the wallet as a Coach wristlet valued at $100, brown with a typical Coach design on it. She said it contained four credit cards, two Bank of America VISA cards (one was a business card and one was a rewards card), an RBC Bank VISA card, an RBC debit card, $50 in cash, a $40 gift card to Best Buy and her driver’s license. The woman told Larson she cancelled all her credit and debit cards, although the suspect had already charged between $1,200 and $1,500 to one of her cards, which she was not able to cancel in time as each phone call to cancel the cards took approximately 20 minutes. She said charges were made from Game Stop for a large sum, a shoe company, and Walgreen’s. After collecting information from the woman, Larson said he spoke with the manager at Pinkberry, who said he would look into the security camera footage and get back to him. Larson also spoke with mall security to look at cameras but said the view was obscured and because the camera was rotating, noted the crime could have occurred when the camera wasn’t watching.

TIRES TAKEN

Officer Jason Brodeur was dispatched to Town Fair Tire located at 1085 Bald Hill Rd. at approximately 4:29 p.m. on March 26 for the report of a larceny. Brodeur met with a man who said the victims received a call from their corporate office stating a wholesale tire company saw two different vehicles stealing used tires from their used tire cage. He was notified that the two license plates were 308-068 and 647-961. The man said he did not have descriptions of the individuals taking the tires or the vehicles. He also told Brodeur Town Fair Tire would like to press charges. Brodeur said the man did not have a full inventory of tires that had been taken.

SHOPLIFTING

Officer Nicholas Reay and another officer were dispatched to Wal-Mart at 650 Bald Hill Rd. at 3:29 p.m. on March 29 for a shoplifting in progress. Dispatch advised that Wal-Mart loss prevention personnel were in pursuit of a white male in his late 30s, who had attempted to steal a cart full of merchandise from the store. Loss prevention said a male suspect was observed selecting multiple items and place them in a carriage, walking to the front of the store, passing all points of purchase without paying for the merchandise. Loss prevention said when they met the suspect outside, he left the carriage and merchandise behind and took off running. They said the man was seen wearing a Patriots sweatshirt and a Patriots hat. While running through the parking lot of Sears, the man was seen taking off his sweatshirt down to a white T-shirt. Reay said the suspect’s last known location was just beyond the On The Border restaurant on Bald Hill Road. Although the merchandise was recovered, loss prevention said they wished to pursue criminal charges. The total loss and recovered value of the merchandise is $327.89. Reay said photos of the recovered merchandise and the suspect were forwarded to the Records Division and the investigation will continue as new suspect information is developed.

MARIJUANA

While on patrol at approximately 6:35 p.m. on March 13, Officer Walter Larson observed a vehicle traveling north on Greenwich Avenue, take a right onto Metro Center Boulevard without coming to a complete stop at the red light for northbound traffic. Larson said he pulled behind the vehicle and stopped it on Metro Center Blvd. Larson said he approached the passenger side of the vehicle and asked the operator for her license, registration and proof of insurance, advising her why he stopped her, for which she apologized. While speaking with the woman, Larson said he detected the strong odor of burnt marijuana emanating from the interior of the vehicle. When asked when she had last smoked marijuana in the vehicle, the woman said “a couple of hours ago.” She told Larson the odor was very strong on the passenger side of the vehicle because they had used the passenger side ashtray to ash the marijuana cigarettes. She then showed him the ashtray, which contained burned marijuana ashes. Larson said he had the woman exit the vehicle and a search of her was negative for contraband. He said he determined her license was active and there were no warrants out for her. Larson said a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a hand-rolled marijuana cigarette in the ashtray of the center console and above the radio, there was a hidden compartment door, where he found a clear plastic Ziploc bag containing a green leafy vegetative substance, believed to be marijuana, which later field tested positive for marijuana, all of which was seized. Kaley J. O’Neil, 22, of Cranston was issued Warwick Municipal Court citations for Obedience to Traffic Control Device and for Possession of Marijuana – 1st Offense, given a Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal court date and released at the scene. Back at Warwick Police Department headquarters, Larson said he weighed the suspected marijuana at a weight of 6.7 grams and took photographs of the marijuana and positive field test results and entered the seized marijuana into evidence.
