SHOPLIFTING

Officer Britton Kelly was dispatched to the Wal-Mart at 650 Bald Hill Road at approximately 5:16 p.m. on May 26 for a report of a shoplifter in custody. Upon arrival, Kelly met with a loss prevention officer, who said he witnessed a Wal-Mart employee open a package and conceal the item in his sweatshirt. He said he discovered the package that was opened was a Samsung camera. He said the employee later passed all points of purchase without paying for the concealed merchandise. He told Kelly while speaking to the employee, he discovered that he had also stolen a cell phone case and two bottles of cologne. He said the total value of the stolen merchandise was $331.11 and Wal-Mart would like to press charges. Aaryn T. Geraghty, 23, of 47 West St. in Warwick, was arrested and transported to Warwick Police Department headquarters without incident. Geraghty was charged with one count of shoplifting and then released.

Officer Robert Canis-Langlais was dispatched to the Wal-Mart at 840 Post Road at approximately 2:07 p.m. on May 25 for a report of two female shoplifters in custody. Upon arrival, Canis-Langlais met with a Wal-Mart asset protection officer, who said he observed two unknown females who he has previously observed on multiple occasions involving price tag switching behaving suspiciously in the women’s clothing department. He said the women were identified as Debbie A. Martin, 28, of 111 Waterman Ave. in North Providence, who was wearing a black sweater and gray pants, and Marie Dubois, 23, of 258 Auburn St. in Cranston, who was wearing a gray top and black shorts. He said the subjects selected various women’s clothing and proceeded to the intimates department and men’s department to conceal the items in Martin’s purse and the pants pockets of Dubois. He said the women then made their way to the front of the store, where they paid for two items, but made no attempt to pay for the merchandise concealed in the bag and on their person. The two then exited the store, where they were approached by asset protection and escorted back into the store. Once inside the office, all merchandise was recovered for a total value of $49.53 (seven items for Martin) and $11.93 (two items for Dubois). The asset protection officer told Canis-Langlais Wal-Mart wished to pursue a criminal complaint and a no-trespass order against the women. Both women were handcuffed and escorted, separately, to the Warwick Police Department headquarters, where they were fingerprinted and processed. Both Martin and Dubois were released on a Third District Court summons for one count of shoplifting.

Officer Stephen Major was dispatched to J.C. Penney at 400 Bald Hill Road at approximately 3 p.m. on May 23 in reference to a shoplifter in custody. Upon arrival, Major met with a loss prevention associate, who said she observed a female select 11 items, conceal or put on those items and pass all points of purchase, making no attempt to pay. The 11 items totaled $179. She told Major the store was unable to recover the clothes the woman was wearing due to the fact she was wearing them. The woman was wearing a total of eight items, including one bra, four tank tops and three pairs of underwear. She said the total amount for the un-recovered items was $97, which J.C. Penney wanted in restitution. Katherine G. James, 19, of 136 High St. in Westerly, was arrested and transported to Warwick Police Department headquarters, where she was jailed and processed without incident. She was released with a District Court summons. Major said it should be noted that James had a Rhode Island EBT card bearing another woman’s name in her possession.

Officer Stephen Major was dispatched to J.C. Penney at 400 Bald Hill Road at approximately 4:11 p.m. on May 23 in reference to three shoplifters in custody, two adult females and one adult male. Upon arrival, Major met with loss prevention associates, who said they observed three subjects – later identified as Dwan Thompson, 24, of 229 Miller St., Apt. C6 in Luldow, Mass.; Carolyn Desiree Jackson, 18, of 2732 17th Ave. S in Minneapolis, Minn.; and Sattoria Antoinette Rule, 22, of 2732 17th Ave. S. in Minneapolis, Minn. – enter the store and then split up. Thompson was observed entering the men’s department, selecting a Nike coat and then entering the men’s fitting room before proceeding onto the sales floor, where he concealed one item valued at $55 and eventually passed all points of purchase without making any attempt to pay. Rule was observed selecting two items valued at $122 and eventually passing all points of purchase without making any attempt to pay. Jackson was observed concealing three items valued at $154 and passing all points of purchase without making any attempt to pay. Loss prevention then approached the three subjects, identified themselves as J.C. Penney Loss Prevention and asked for the unpaid merchandise back. They said all three subjects cooperated, handed the merchandise over and were escorted to the Loss Prevention office. Major said all three subjects were arrested and transported to Warwick Police Department headquarters, where they were jailed and processed without incident. Thompson, Jackson and Rule were each released with a District Court summons. Major said there were three separate videos and three separate receipts for each offense and arrest, all placed into the Property locker.

DUI

Officer Jeffrey Taranto was dispatched to report of a truck onto a stonewall near the golf course on Ives Road at 11:10 p.m. on May 14. Dispatch advised that injuries were unknown, and the reporting party felt the male operator was intoxicated. Upon arrival, Taranto met with the operator, who was identified as Michael Carroll, 43, of 231 Austin Road in North Kingstown. Taranto said the white pickup came to rest on the stonewall of the golf course, and that there was heavy front-end damage to the vehicle. Taranto said the reporting party, who was still on scene, told him he heard the crash and saw the male operator, identified as Carroll, get out of the vehicle. He then called police. Taranto said he asked Carroll if he was injured and where he was going. Carroll said he wasn’t injured and that he was going home. Taranto said he observed Carroll to have watery, bloodshot eyes and he detected the smell of an intoxicating beverage upon his breath. His speech was slurred and he mumbled. When asked where he was coming from, Carroll reportedly said he came from the bar, and when asked if he consumed any alcoholic beverages, he said, “Yes, way too much.” When Taranto asked for Carroll’s driver’s license, he said he fumbled around, looked confused and could not locate it.

Taranto said he asked Carroll if he would submit to a series of standardized field sobriety tests, which he agreed to do. During the test, Taranto said he observed Carroll swaying from side to side and stopped the test for his safety. At that point, Taranto said he determined Carroll was unfit to operate a motor vehicle safely. Taranto said Carroll told him he knew he messed up and that he made a big mistake. He also said he was concerned about the tools in the back of his truck. He told Taranto he thought he fell asleep while driving eastbound on Ives Road and woke up on the stonewall. Carroll was arrested and transported to Warwick Police Department headquarters, where he made a confidential phone call and refused to submit to a breath test. Carroll was fingerprinted, processed and charged with DUI with BAC unknown and refusal to submit to a chemical test. He was given violations for DUI (first offense, BAC unknown) with a District Court date and for refusal to submit to a chemical test and laned roadway violations. Taranto said he then provided Carroll a courtesy transport to Hale Avenue in Warwick, where he was released into the custody of a sober adult.
