MARIJUANA

On Oct. 6 at 1:19 a.m., Officer Paul Wells was working a uniform detail at Motel 6, when he saw a man sitting in a window ledge inside a room holding onto some type of cigarette. Wells said the man was holding it in a manner that people smoking marijuana hold a marijuana cigarette.

Wells said he responded toward the room the man was in and as he got to the staircase on the first floor just below the man’s room, he said the hallway smelled of a very strong odor of marijuana. He then went upstairs to room 220, where he observed the odor to be very strong. Upon knocking on the door, he said a man answered and told him to hang on because he had to get dressed. A short time later, he opened the door and Wells confirmed it was the man he saw smoking at the window.

Wells said the room still had a smoky cloud in it and there were two other males present. He asked all three if they were done smoking marijuana in the motel and was there any more. One male, later identified as Reyes Aquino-Canario, 28, of 10 Burgess Street, Methuen, Mass., walked over to the bed closest to the door and lifted up the mattress and then walked toward Wells with what looked like a large clear bag of marijuana buds. He told Wells the bag was his, handed it to him, and said they had no more. He told Wells the three of them came to Rhode Island to buy marijuana. He first said he bought it at the motel, but then changed it to he bought it in Providence. They then came to Motel 6 to stay for the night and smoke it. He told Wells he “heard Motel 6 was a great place to smoke weed.”

At this time, Wells said another officer arrived to assist and patted down Aquino-Canario. Dispatch informed Wells Aquino-Canario had an active warrant out of Utica City, N.Y. for Assault in the First Degree. Dispatch confirmed the warrant and that the Utica Police Department will extradite.

Aquino-Canario was taken into custody and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where the marijuana was weighed and field-tested positive. Wells said the marijuana weighed 3.75 ounces, and the marijuana cigarette weighed .4 grams. Both were tagged as evidence. Aquino-Canario was processed and placed in a cell, to be held for the next session on the Possession of Marijuana Charge from the Warwick department, as well as the Fugitive of Justice charge.

Wells said the other two males with Aquino-Canario were identified, had no issues and were released from the scene. One of them was the renter of the room. Both were advised that the motel no longer wanted them as guests and told to leave the property, which they did with no issues.

CAR BREAKS

On Sept. 30 at 4 p.m., Officer Adam Arico responded to the lobby of Warwick Police headquarters to meet with a female party regarding a larceny from her motor vehicle. The woman said she parked her vehicle in her driveway on Burbank Drive at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 29. At that time, she had left her vehicle unlocked. When she returned the next morning at 7, she noticed the contents of her glove compartment had been spilled out onto her seat. She said she conducted an inspection of her vehicle and observed that her GPS unit (described as a black Garmin GPS unit) was missing, as well as a white iPhone 5S charging cord. She said there was also approximately $5 in cash and change taken from her vehicle. She estimated the value of the GPS unit to be $100 and the iPhone charging cord at $20. She completed a written statement at headquarters, which was entered into Records. No suspects.

On Sept. 30 at 10:20 a.m., Officer Darren Parrillo responded to Maryland Avenue in reference to a larceny from a motor vehicle. Upon arrival, Officer Parrillo met with the reporting party, who said his wife had her purse taken from the vehicle that morning. It was described as a tan tote style purse with a gold clasp and a long brown clutch wallet inside. In her wallet, there was one USAA debit card, medical cards for his wife and their two children, Victoria’s Secret and Kohl’s credit cards, and her driver’s license. He said there was no cash in her wallet. Parrillo said the report was taken for documentation purposes. He said it should be noted that in that area on the same morning, there were numerous car larcenies that had been called in. No suspects.

On Sept. 30 at 6:01 a.m., Officer Michael Harris was dispatched to a residence on Tennessee Avenue for the report of a larceny from a vehicle. Upon arrival, Officer Harris met with the reporting party and vehicle owners, a mother and her daughter. The mother said she parked her vehicle at approximately 6 p.m. the night before. She said when she entered her vehicle the next morning; she realized it had been rummaged through. She said she was missing $30 in loose change, two Sylvania headrest DVD players (unknown serial numbers), and a Husky tool bag containing wrenches. She said her vehicle was unlocked throughout the evening. Harris said he then spoke with the daughter, who said her vehicle was also unlocked and had been gone through. Although she said it was apparent the vehicle had been rummaged through, no items were known to be missing at the time. Both parties told Harris several suspicious parties had walked by over the past week, however they were unable to provide any names. While looking through her vehicle, the mother said she observed a black flashlight that did not belong to her. Harris said it is believed the flashlight may belong to one of the suspects involved; it was recovered and entered as evidence to be processed for possible fingerprints.
