DISORDERLY

On Nov. 10 at 11:30 a.m., Officer Joseph DeDonato responded to Macy’s at Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Road, in the north side parking lot in reference to a disturbance going on. Upon arrival, DeDonato was briefed by a sergeant on scene, who told him there was a road rage incident between the suspect, identified as Miguel Angel Marrero, 20, of 72 Gough Avenue, Apt. 45, West Warwick, and another man. DeDonato interviewed that man along with two female witnesses, one of which called 911, that observed the incident, who all said a red Subaru, which Marrero was driving, was operating at a high rate of speed in the parking lot of the mall and almost struck two women who were attempting to cross in a crosswalk. Witnesses said the women yelled something at the driver (possibly “slow down”), at which point he exited the vehicle and began yelling at the women. At this point, the man said he interceded in an attempt to protect the women, as he described Marrero to be “out of control,” yelling and screaming profanities. Marrero then approached the man, calling him “n****” and asking if he wanted to fight. The man said Marrero threatened him several times and approached him in a menacing manner, however never physically assaulted him.

DeDonato returned to Warwick Police Department headquarters after he was advised that Marrero, who had left the scene prior to the arrival of police, had responded to police headquarters to discuss the incident with officers. Marrero said he was driving at Warwick Mall and two females got upset because he did not stop for them at the crosswalk and he got out of his car and engaged them in a heated argument. He admitted it “was a mistake” and said he should have kept driving but he didn’t. He said at some point an older male came to the scene and approached him, cursing. Marrero said he lost his cool and began cursing at him. At that point, he said he left the scene and shortly thereafter, received a phone call from relatives indicating police were looking for him. Marrero was charged with one count of Disorderly Conduct and released on a Summons to appear in District Court.

AUTO THEFT

On Nov. 7 at 5:40 p.m., Officer Eric Lima was dispatched to the northwest side of Macy’s at Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Road, for the report of an auto theft. Upon arrival, Lima met with a woman, who said she parked her vehicle in the lot closest to Red Robin at approximately 1:17 p.m. and upon returning at approximately 4:32 p.m., she noticed it was missing. She said she checked the area but was unable to locate her vehicle, which was identified as Massachusetts registration 5EN350 on a silver 2008 Honda Civic sedan.

The woman said she contacted Warwick Mall Security, who checked the parking lot for approximately 45 minutes but were unable to locate the vehicle. Lima said he took the woman’s keys and used the vehicle’s key fob in an attempt to sound the alarm as well as visually check the area. Lima said a check of all parking lots at the mall was also unsuccessful. The woman said the following was in her vehicle: Samsung Galaxy 3 and Samsung Galaxy 4 cell phones (valued at approximately $300), a gold necklace (valued at approximately $300), and a 32 GB Apple tablet (valued at approximately $475).

The woman contacted her boyfriend, the registered owner of the car, who responded to the scene and completed a stolen vehicle statement advising he wished to file a complaint. The vehicle was later entered as stolen. Upon clearing the scene, Lima said he contacted Macy’s Loss Prevention to review their surveillance footage but was advised that the only available camera for that area did not pan far enough to the location where the woman said she had parked the vehicle.

MALICIOUS DAMAGE

On Nov. 3 at 8:54 a.m., Officer David Thompson was dispatched to Rocky Hill School, 530 Ives Road, for a malicious damage and larceny complaint. Upon arrival, Thompson met with the maintenance supervisor for Rocky Hill School, who said on Nov. 2 at approximately 8 a.m., his employee was checking the grounds and found approximately nine balusters busted out of the hand rails at the dock on the south side of the property. The supervisor said two cameras used to capture wildlife that were also stolen.

The supervisor then took Thompson to the dock, where the officer observed several balusters broken from the dock hand rails. The supervisor pointed out where one of the cameras, which were used to capture predators who raid turtle egg nests, was chained up to the edge of the dock. He said one of the cameras further down the path was also missing and provided Thompson with an email describing everything that was stolen, which included: two Browning Recon Force FHD cameras, camouflage in color, valued at approximately $139.99 each; two Sandisk Ultra Class 64 FB memory SD cards; 16 AA batteries, total worth approximately $357; and nine balusters damaged, valued at $1.57 each.

Thompson said it should be noted the employee checks the property daily at approximately 8 a.m. and on Oct. 30, the property was OK and that when he returned to check the property on Nov. 2 at approximately 8 a.m., he discovered the damage and the missing cameras. No suspects or witnesses.

NATIONAL GRID SCAM

On Nov. 6 at 9:45 a.m., Officer Robert Canis-Langlais was dispatched to the Greenwood Flower and Garden Shop, 782 Main Avenue, for a scam over the phone. Upon arrival, Canis-Langlais met with a woman, who said she received a phone call from 844-422-1720 stating they were National Grid and were calling about a notice mailed out seven days ago. She said the person stated that he would have a crew turn off the electricity in 45 minutes and that her bill was three months behind.

The woman said she called National Grid at the collections number provided on her bill and they said her account was fine and they were receiving a few calls with the same information involving a scam. At this time, she wanted the information reported to the police. She did not hand over any money to the suspect.

CHILD MOLESTATION

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced on Nov. 13 that Jose Colon, 42, formerly of Central Falls, was found guilty of first degree child molestation. The Kent County Superior Court Jury returned the verdict in approximately four hours after an 11-day trial presided over by Superior Court Justice Brian P. Stern.

During the course of the trial, the State proved that the defendant molested a 6-year-old in 2001 at his apartment in Warwick.

Warwick Police Detective Kerri Chatten led the investigation. Special Assistant Attorney General Shannon Signore, chief of the Child Abuse Unit, prosecuted the case on behalf of the Office of Attorney General. Colon was remanded to the ACI pending sentencing, which has been scheduled for Jan. 25, 2016.

Predators are sick individuals who use fear and intimidation to keep their victims quiet, but do child molesters believe that the victims won't report them someday? I don't know the circumstances, but it appears that the victim, now twenty years old, had the courage to come forward and report this; the only downside to this (and definitely NOT the victim's fault) is that he may have done this to many other victims during the last 14 years. I hope that his arrest will help the victim's recovery; Kudos to the WPD and Det. Chatten.

Most of us are blessed growing up in a loving, protective family where there's never fear of any relatives or family friends- many are not so fortunate and suffer PTSD and other mental health issues as well as substance abuse and inability to form healthy relationships because of these depraved individuals.
