City man’s death

investigated

Rhode Island State Police are investigating the death of a Cranston man who has been missing since the summer.

A funeral for Kerry Mello, 36, was held over the weekend. He had last been seen in Providence in early August 2015, and his vehicle was found in Boston in October. An obituary lists his date of death as Aug. 19, 2015.

Authorities in Massachusetts had been investigating his disappearance, and searches had been conducted at several Warwick properties during the summer and fall in connection with the probe.

Shots fired in separate

incidents; one hospitalized

Police are investigating a pair of incidents involving shots being fired over the weekend.

The first reportedly occurred at Farmington Terrance on Farmington Avenue in the early hours of Saturday morning. Responding officers are said to have found shell casings in front of one building, and bullet holes in an empty car. No one was injured. Surveillance footage reportedly showed a white, two-door Honda without license plates fleeing the scene.

The second incident occurred around midnight on Monday morning. Reports indicated two vehicles were driving down Niantic Avenue shooting at one another. A man was reportedly grazed in the head with a bullet and hospitalized.

Two indicted on sexual, physical assault charges

A man and woman have been indicted on multiple charges following a Cranston police investigation into the sexual and physical assault of several children, according to the office of Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin.

Sergio Resto, 31, of 664 Plainfield St. in Providence, is charged with one count of first-degree child molestation, six counts of second-degree child molestation, two counts of first-degree sexual assault, three counts of second-degree sexual assault, six counts of assault with the intent to commit sexual assault, and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon.

Raquel Delgado, 67, of 135 Westwood Ave. in Cranston, is charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault, three counts of second-degree sexual assault, one count of assault with intent to commit sexual assault, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, and two counts of simple assault.

The secret grand jury indictments were reported out Jan. 20.

According to Kilmartin’s office, Resto is alleged to have sexually and physically assaulted three children with whom he was familiar. The alleged crimes took place in Cranston on multiple occasions between 2005 and May 2015, prosecutors said.

In a press release issued following Resto’s June arrest, Cranston police said the investigation began when a 14-year-old female filed a sexual assault complaint against him in April 2014. A second victim, a 16-year-old male, filed a complaint against Resto in May 2015.

Delgado is alleged to have provided Resto with access to the victims after being informed by the state’s Department of Children, Youth & Families that he was not to have such access, Kilmartin’s office said. She is further alleged to have physically assaulted two of the victims.

Resto is current being held without bail, with a Feb. 3 arraignment scheduled in Providence Superior Court. Delgado was ordered held without bail at her Jan. 19 arraignment, with a bail hearing scheduled for Feb. 9.
