VANDALISM

On Feb. 25 at 8:25 a.m., Officer Brian Murray was dispatched to the Cowesett Hills Apartments for the report of an attempted larceny. Upon arrival, Officer Murray met with the manager of the location, who said when he arrived to work that morning he noticed that someone had attempted to steal the money machine, which is located in the clubhouse.

The manager then viewed the video surveillance with a maintenance worker, which showed at around 8:09 the night before one black male, with a hat and a cloth covering his face, enter the clubhouse and was seen looking around the clubhouse and exited. Shortly after, the male came back in with a crowbar and started to attempt to tear the money machine from the wall. Another male dressed in a pink paint suit then entered the clubhouse and helped the other male by pulling at the machine. Both parties were unsuccessful. They were then seen on video leaving the clubhouse, getting it a silver colored passenger vehicle and leaving the area, going left toward Post Road.

Officer Murray said the drywall next to the money machine had been damaged from the crowbar. Both suspects were seen wearing gloves in the video, so there was nothing on scene to be processed. A sergeant responded to the scene and took photos of the damage. The manager and the maintenance worker were unable to identify either of the two suspects. The manager was able to burn a copy of the video surveillance and gave it to Officer Murray, which will be forwarded to detectives, along with the report, to see if they can zoom in on the license plate of the suspect vehicle.

RIMS & TIRES TAKEN

On Feb. 25 at 12:19 a.m., Officer David Waddington responded to a residence on Narragansett Parkway for the report of the larceny of rims and tires from a vehicle.

Upon arrival, Officer Waddington met with a man, who said he returned after he had been gone for about an hour to check on his wife at work. He noticed that the rims and tires were missing from his wife’s 2016 Honda Accord. He said his wife was on her way home from work.

When the man’s wife arrived, Officer Waddington asked her to fill out a statement. She said that around midnight her husband contacted her and indicated that the rims and tires had been stolen from her vehicle. She indicated that her husband had left their home at about 11 p.m. to check on her at work. She said she owns a restaurant in Pawtuxet Village and that her husband checks on her prior to closing every day. She advised that when he got back home, he noticed the rims and tires were missing from her vehicle.

Officer Waddington observed the Honda Accord in the driveway. The vehicle was backed in and placed on rocks, which had been taken from the stonewall. He said the vehicle was teetering and all four 20-inch rims and tires had been taken. The approximate value of the rims and tires was $3,000. A sergeant that responded to the scene took a series of digital photographs for evidence.

The woman said if the subjects were apprehended, she wished to press charges for the larceny. Officer Waddington said he attempted to make contact with several of the residences close to the driveway, but he was unable to at that time.

SHOPLIFTING

On Feb. 25, Officer Christopher Lo was dispatched to JC Penney, 400 Bald Hill Road, for a shoplifting. Dispatch advised a male was in custody but he was suffering from an anxiety attack and rescue was en route.

Upon arrival, Lo met with a loss prevention associate in the loss prevention office. He said a male was there, who was seated and having difficulty breathing. Officer Lo attempted to tend to the man, but he refused and said he was having a panic attack.

While waiting for Warwick Fire, the associate told Lo she observed the male subject, who identified himself as Tarek Hayat, in the shoe department. She said the man was looking at red Converse sneakers. He selected a pair, removed the red Converse sneakers he was wearing when he entered the store, and switched the pairs, placing his own sneakers into the sneaker box and wore the new sneakers around the store, meeting up with a female subject. He showed the female his old sneakers in the Converse box then placed the box back with the other Converse sneakers on display. Another loss prevention agent observed the old sneakers in the shoe box on the display. The man and the woman then continued shopping, where the man made a purchase in the men’s department and exited the store, passing all points of sale and not paying for the sneakers he was wearing. The loss prevention associate identified himself and attempted to escort the man back to the loss prevention office, but he became uncooperative struggled with the associate, causing merchandise racks to fall. The struggle continued on the ground until the suspect became fatigued and cooperated. Upon entering the loss prevention office, the man claimed to be having a panic attack and placed an item in his mouth. Loss prevention later located a wrapper for a Suboxone tablet, which the man said he takes for anxiety. Upon calling police for the shoplifting investigation, Warwick Fire Department was dispatched for medical treatment of the man.

Warwick Fire personnel arrived on scene and said the man would be transported to Kent Hospital for medical treatment. While assisting Fire, Lo placed the man under arrest for one count of shoplifting and performed a search incident to arrest. While doing so, Lo said he located another Suboxone tablet in a wrapper. The man said he was prescribed the Suboxone but did not know the name of his prescribing doctor.

The man was then transported to Kent Hosptial by Warwick Fire and Officer Lo followed. Upon arrival, Lo said it was learned the man was given a dosage of Narcan and was responding to it. He continued giving medical personnel at the hospital his name and date of birth as Tarek Hayat (June 11, 1992). Officer Lo said he advised the man of the charges of Shoplifting and Possession of Schedule I-IV and said he needed positive ID in order for him to released. The man then informed Lo of another name he goes by with the same date of birth, Mohamed Samo, 23, of 512 Pawtucket Avenue, Pawtucket. Lo said he informed Channel 2 of the new information and it was learned Samo had a warrant out of New Jersey for Possession of Dangerous Drugs.

Samo was charged with one count of Shoplifting and one count of Possession of Scheduled I-IV.

On Feb. 26, the felony charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance was dismissed from the criminal complaint based on the fact that the defendant’s prescription for Suboxone, prescribed to Mohamed Samo, was presented at arraignment. Samo also supplied his U.S. passport.

"The approximate value of the rims and tires was $3,000"...approximate value of locking lug nuts: $50 (plus the rims and tires).
