SHOPLIFTING

On June 6 at 8:20 p.m., Officer Mitchel Voyer, along with Officer Christopher Lo and Sergeant John McAniff, responded to Wal-Mart at 650 Bald Hill Road for the report of a shoplifting that was occurring. While en route, it was reported that loss prevention was watching a male, who was acting suspiciously in the Electronics Department and was bagging DVDs, other electronics, and a safe, and he appeared to be ready to shoplift the items.

Upon arrival, Officer Lo and Sergeant McAniff waited outside as loss prevention continued to watch the male. Once he passed all points of purchase without attempting to pay for the merchandise in his shopping cart, officers made contact with him. The man, later identified as Ryan Danielson, 22, of 815 Sandy Lane, Warwick, was placed in handcuffs and escorted to the loss prevention office.

While there, Voyer met with a loss prevention officer, who said she saw Danielson looking around suspiciously in the Electronics Department. He selected several movies and placed them in a shopping cart, where other merchandise had already been placed. He then went to the front registers, took Wal-Mart bags and placed them in the cart. Danielson headed back to the corner of the store, where he bagged the merchandise in his cart and then exited the store, making no attempt to pay for the concealed merchandise. All stolen items were recovered, which included numerous electronic items, food items, and a safe, representing a total of 31 items with a total value of $378.01.

Danielson was transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he was processed and released on a District Court summons for one count of shoplifting misdemeanor.

WILLFUL TRESPASS

On June 6 at 5:55 p.m., officers were dispatched to J. C. Penney at Warwick Mall at 400 Bald Hill Road for the report of suspicious activity. A J. C. Penney loss prevention officer said a male was in the store who had previously been no trespassed from J. C. Penney. The male appeared to be gathering items in an attempt to shoplift. He was described as a white male wearing a gray hat, a tank top, having long blonde hair, and carrying a green backpack. He was last seen entering the fitting room.

Officers arrived on scene and waited inside the store. A short time later, a male matching the description provided was seen exiting the fitting room. It appeared he was looking for a way to exit the store rapidly. Officer Christopher Lo blocked his path of travel and removed clothing belonging to J. C. Penney from the man’s hands and secured his arms behind his back.

The man identified himself as Ryan James Lucas, 33, of 60 Pembrook Avenue, Providence. Channel 2 was able to confirm he had been issued a no trespass on May 28. As a result, Lucas was taken into custody.

Lo said a couple of items belonging to J. C. Penney were located in Lucas’ backpack, but because he had not passed all final points of sale, there were no shoplifting charges.

Lucas was transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he was fingerprinted and processed. He was subsequently released on a Third District Court summons for one count of willful trespass.

WARRANTS

On June 7 at 5:06 p.m., Officer Derek Mourato and Officer Vargas were dispatched to Sports Authority at 400 Bald Hill for the report of a subject with active warrants, witnessed by mall security.

Dispatch reported the male subject’s name was Kevin Wulff and confirmed he had two active bench warrants, an active Warwick Police warrant for felony shoplifting, and an active warrant from Smithfield Police. Vargas was able to identify the man as Kevin Wulff from previous police contact.

Mourato approached the male and asked him his name, to which the man gave a different name from Kevin Wulff. Upon asking him a second time, he said, “Yeah, it’s Kevin Wulff. I know I have a few warrants.” Wulff was advised he was under arrest and placed in handcuffs. While searching Wulff incident to arrest, Mourato said he located a pair of wire cutters in his pocket and he was also carrying an empty bag.

Wulff was transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he was booked and processed by Mourato. The four warrants were removed from NCIC by Dispatch. Smithfield was contacted and advised of the apprehension. At the completion of processing, Wulff was transported to the ACI.

CRACK COCAINE

On June 3 at 6:08 p.m., Officer Jacob Elderkin was conducting a routine check of the area in the parking lot of Motel 6 at 20 Jefferson Boulevard for criminal activity when he observed a black 2011 Jeep Liberty occupied by three white males. He said the vehicle was extremely beat up. It was registered to a female. Upon observing his police cruiser, Elderkin said the three subjects inside the vehicle appeared to be extremely nervous, quickly exited the Jeep, and walked into the rear of Building H of Motel 6.

Elderkin said he ran the vehicle registration and vehicle through cross-agency checks and discovered the operator of the vehicle had been stopped in the past while operating it. The male was identified as Joseph D. Corvese, 24, of 122C Brookside Avenue, West Warwick. Upon running checks on Corvese, it was determined he had an active bench warrant for his arrest. As Elderkin was getting ready to leave the parking lot, he said he saw Corvese, who was confirmed through arrest photos from the past, exit the Building H rear door and respond to the area of his Jeep.

At this point, Elderkin exited his cruiser and began walking toward Corvese, who became extremely nervous and began to walk away in a quick manner upon seeing Elderkin. The officer called out to him and said he needed to speak with Corvese, who said, “Why, what’s up?” as he continued to walk away from Elderkin. Corvese continued walking away from Elderkin, disobeying his commands to stop. Elderkin advanced toward him and asked him his name, to which Corvese said, “Joe.” When asked for his last name, Corvese took off running.

Elderkin advised Dispatch he was in a foot pursuit. As he chased Corvese, Elderkin saw him throw a plastic baggie to his right hand side and also dropped a can of orange soda. Elderkin said he also saw Corvese drop an item from his left hand before he was able to catch up to him and tackle him to the ground.

After placing Corvese in handcuffs and notifying Dispatch he was in custody, Elderkin said he found a glass stem, which is commonly used to smoke crack. He then requested the assistance of K9 to respond to the scene to help with locating items thrown during the foot pursuit. Officer Aaron Steere and his K9 partner, Viking, soon arrived on scene. During a quick search of the area, a plastic baggie was located that contained six individually wrapped baggies of a small white rock-like substance believed to be crack cocaine. It was later field tested and tested positive for 2.7 grams of crack cocaine valued at $480. The item Corvese dropped to his left was located and identified as a crack pipe, which Elderkin said was later destroyed, as it had no evidentiary value.

Corvese was transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where he was printed, photographed, and processed. The warrant was removed from RILETS. Corvese was charged with one count of manufacture/possession/delivery schedule I/II and one count of resisting legal or illegal arrest. He was held for the next session with the bail commissioner.
