Cranston man charged

with child molestation

A Cranston man has been charged with first-degree child molestation.

Robert P. Barboza, 46, of 784 Park Ave., was arrested last week in Providence and held pending arraignment, according to a statement from the Cranston Police Department. Providence police assisted with the arrest.

The Cranston department’s Special Victims Unit began an investigation after receiving information that Barboza had allegedly sexually assaulted a 10-year-old child who was known to him. The victim is said to have told detectives and personnel from the state Department of Children, Youth, and Families of the abuse during an interview.

2 face drug, child

neglect charges

A man found asleep in a vehicle with a two-year-old, and the child’s mother, are facing drug and child neglect charges.

Cheyenne Marie Renken, 25, of 152 Easton Ave. in Warwick, and Derek Smith, 27, of 52 Sinclair Ave. in Cranston, are each charged with felony counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, conspiracy, and child neglect.

Cranston Police Patrolman Michael Long reports being on patrol in the Edgewood area of that city shortly before 8 p.m. on June 30 when he observed a parked Ford Focus on Dennis Avenue that appeared to be running and had its lights on, with the driver’s door slightly ajar.

Upon closer inspection, Long reports observing a toddler in the back seat. He then went to check on the male operator – identified as Smith – who was asleep.

According to Long, Smith showed signs of opiate abuse. A search of Smith uncovered a plastic bag containing a powdery substance believed to be heroin, and at that point, he was placed under arrest.

Smith told the patrolman the child belonged to his girlfriend, Renken, who was in a Dennis Avenue home with friends. Patrolman Luis Collardo and additional personnel responded to the scene to provide assistance.

Long and Collardo approached the residence, and located Renken in an apartment with a male and female. Renken exited with the officers to head to the vehicle, and subsequently was found to be in possession of narcotics and items related to their use and sale. According to officers, there were narcotics in the vehicle that “could have been easily accessed and consumed by the child.”

The child’s biological father responded to the scene to take custody. The matter was reported to the Department of Children, Youth, and Families.

Woman charged in

tattoo parlor incident

A local woman is facing charges after an alleged destructive outburst in a tattoo parlor.

Jamie N. Nelson, 27, of 28 Dante Ave. in Johnston, is charged with misdemeanor counts of vandalism and disorderly conduct. She was issued a summons to appear in Third District Court later this month.

According to the narrative report of Patrolman Michael Protano, police responded to Royalty Ink on Greenville Avenue on June 30. Dispatch reported that two female suspects had broken windows and display cases at the business before fleeing the scene toward Killingly Street.

Officers located and detained the two women, one of whom was identified as Nelson. According to Protano’s report, witnesses indicated an argument over a tattoo Nelson was getting led to the incident, in which front window panes and display cases were broken.
