FIREWORKS ON JULY 4

According to police, a total of about 200 calls were received for various incidents on July 4 involving firecrackers, fights, and other disturbances. A few of them appear below. No arrests were made in these incidents.

According to a 911 call that came in on July 4 at 12:14 a.m., a fight was about to break out involving a large group of people and unknown weapons at an address on Pender Avenue.

A second caller said there were two people with baseball bats and brass knuckles, one of which was described as being a Hispanic male. They were reported to be breaking things before the whole group went to the beach. More than 100 people were reported being on the street.

At 12:20 a.m., another reporting party said they heard glass breaking. A minute later, it was reported that the 100-plus people were now closer to the water. A total of seven officers responded to the area in question.

According to the police narrative of the incident, everyone involved had left prior to officers’ arrival. Blood was found at the scene. Police said the beach was clear and a fire there was out. Due to the fire continually relighting, Fire apparatus was notified and responded to put out the fire.

At 2:52 a.m., police received a call regarding suspicious activity taking place at an apartment complex on Gilbane Street involving at least five people. It was reported there was a party going on at Apartment 206 of Building 28, in which a group of people were arguing and/or fighting with unknown weapons for at least a half-hour.

According to the police narrative, there was a verbal argument between roommates, but nothing physical or criminal was reported. Two subjects were reported walking from the apartment complex and two adult males were transported and dropped off at an address on Logan Street.

Another 911 call involving a fight between two males was received at 10:14 p.m. They were reported to be fighting with unknown weapons outside a residence on West Shore Road. Six officers responded to the call.

A second caller indicated there was a large group of approximately 30 to 40 people outside, with four to five of them fighting. The reporting party, who was driving by the incident, said there was a lot of blood in the parking lot, but they didn’t know who any of the people were. Shortly after the fighting started, everyone tried to leave the area, but the reporting party was unable to get a plate from any of the fleeing vehicles.

A couple of males were reported going down an alley toward 871 West Shore Rd. According to the police narrative, a Rescue was en route to the location at 10:20 p.m.

Police are looking for a Jamie Alvarez, a male in his 20s who was described as wearing a plaid shirt and shorts.

ATTEMPTED BREAK-IN

On June 25 at 8:59 a.m., Officer Sokphannareth Chea was dispatched to an address on Post Road for the report of malicious damage that occurred overnight; a possible breaking and entering into the garage.

Upon arrival, Chea met with the reporting party, who said at 9 a.m. that day she noticed the garage door did not work right and the window to the right was broken out of the frame. There was evidence that the person was also on the boat in the yard. The woman said the window replacement would be about $500, and it would cost $300 to fix the lock on the door to the left of the garage door, which had been pried.

Chea was then escorted to the garage, where he observed damage to the doorframe where the lock is located, and there was a pry mark on the doorframe in an attempted break. Chea said he also observed the garage window frame, to the right of the garage door, which was damaged and the glass was missing.

Chea checked the surrounding area for any surveillance but none was found. He said it was important to note that the garage is located in the far back right of the residence and is not viewable from the front. No suspects.

SHOPLIFTING

On June 22 at 1 p.m., Officer Darren Parrillo responded to the J. C. Penney Loss Prevention office at Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Road, in reference to an adult female in custody for shoplifting.

Upon arrival, Parrillo met with the reporting party, a member of loss prevention who said earlier that day she observed a female subject, later identified as Lauren A. Baker, 24, of 1018 Main Street, West Warwick, in the fine jewelry department selecting three fine jewelry items, all in square blue boxes, and placing them in her mesh bag. At least two of the items were necklaces. She was then observed entering the fitting room with the mesh bag and exiting a few moments later. Upon checking the fitting room, no merchandise was found. The subject, however, was observed hiding the mesh bag underneath a clothing rack. Upon recovering the bag, the empty jewelry boxes were found inside. At this time, the subject exited the store, passing all points of sale and making no attempt to pay for the concealed merchandise. The woman was then approached by loss prevention and escorted back into the store, where several pieces of jewelry were recovered from her handbag, including a heart-shaped key necklace, a panda pendant necklace, and three pairs of earrings, two of which belonged to J. C. Penney along with the necklaces. Baker claimed to be missing an Opal necklace, which was never recovered. Loss prevention said while Baker was in the loss prevention office she began hitting herself several times in the head and had to be asked to calm down. The total value of the concealed merchandise that was recovered was $325.11.

Baker was taken into custody and transported to Warwick Police headquarters, where she was processed and later released with a District Court summons to appear at Kent County Court House for the charge of one count of misdemeanor shoplifting.
