DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

On November 1 around 11 p.m., Officer Steven Moretti was dispatched to Cedar Pond Drive after an anonymous caller reported that a woman who appeared to be intoxicated was outside of her vehicle, which had sustained heavy front end damage and a flat tire.

Arriving on scene, Officer Moretti made contact with the driver, identified as Shannon Morse, 25, of 80 Roosevelt Avenue in North Attenborough, Mass. According to the report, Morse was standing outside the vehicle that had sustained damage to its front passenger side and had a flat tire that was shredded down to the rim.

Morse admitted driving the vehicle from Apponaug to Cedar Pond Drive on its rim after hitting a curb near the Honey Dew Donuts on Veterans Memorial Drive. Other officers observed parts of the shredded tire along with pieces of the car’s bumper in front of the store.

Officer Moretti asked Morse if she had drunk any alcohol before driving, and she admitted that she had one or two drinks. She also admitted that she was the driver of the car. He then touched the hood of the car, which was still warm and indicated recent operation. While speaking with Morse, who was unsteady on her feet, the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from her and that she had bloodshot eyes.

Other officers arrived on scene to provide backup, and Morse turned very uncooperative and refused to answer any questions. She did not want to hand over her license and registration and refused to submit to a field sobriety test.

After observing Morse, noting her demeanor, detecting the odor of alcohol and her unsteadiness, Officer Moretti determined that it was unsafe for her to operate a motor vehicle. She was taken into custody and transported to police headquarters.

At the station, Morse continued to remain uncooperative and refused to take a chemical breathalyzer test. She was issued violations for driving under the influence, blood alcohol content unknown, refusal to submit to a chemical test, leaving the lane of travel and duty to stop for an accident resulting in vehicle damage. She was later dropped off to a sober adult.

BENCH WARRANT

While on patrol in the Motel 6 parking lot on November 5 around 4:30 a.m., Officer Ali Jaafar noticed a vehicle parked obscurely and running in front of the motel entrance. Due to the high rate of crime and history of criminal activity on the premises, the officer did a background check on the car’s license plates.

The check revealed that an occasional driver of the vehicle was wanted on two separate bench warrants. Shortly after, an individual who resembled the wanted party walked out of the motel. Officer Jaffar approached the individual, identified as Dakarai Smith, 20, of 70 Babcock Street in Providence. Upon further investigation, it was confirmed through DMV photos as well as mug shots that this was the wanted suspect.

Smith was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters, where he was processed without incident. He was then transported to the ACI to be held on the warrants charge. LARCENY

A Maplehurst Avenue resident visited Warwick Police headquarters on November 1 around 11:30 a.m. to report a larceny from a motor vehicle.

Officer Albert Marano met with the victim, who stated she parked her vehicle at her residence on the evening of October 31. When she returned to the vehicle in the morning, she noticed that her glovebox was open and her belongings were strewn throughout the vehicle.

The only item missing appeared to be an iPod, valued at $75. While there are currently no suspects or witnesses, the victim stated that she would like to press charges if one is found.

STOLEN CAR

On October 28 at approximately 4:17 p.m., Officer Brian Fontaine and other members of the department were dispatched to the I.M. Gan Discount Liquor store for a report of an auto theft in progress. Dispatch provided the vehicle’s description as 2016 silver Chevrolet Silverado.

Officer Fontaine met with the victim on scene, who stated that at approximately 4:15 p.m. he pulled his car into the store parking lot and left it running while he went inside. When he returned, he found the vehicle was gone.

The victim provided a vehicle description and his license plate number and indicated that he had the ONSTAR service. He then made contact with the company, who advised they would contact them back shortly after initiating GPS tracking.

Shortly thereafter, ONSTAR contacted the Warwick Police and indicated the vehicle was located in Providence. Providence Police were then contacted and were able to successfully retrieve the car.

SHOPLIFTING

Officers Christian Vargas and Walter Larson responded to the Bald Hill Road Kohl’s on October 26 around 4:52 p.m. for a report of a shoplifting in progress.

Upon arrival the reporting party from the store’s security team advised that a female had walked out of the store with a $50 Superman sweatshirt and left the store without paying. Security approached her outside, and she refused to reenter the store. She then placed the shirt on the ground and left in an older, gold Chevy Malibu. Security provided the car’s license plate number and indicated that the store did want to press charges.

While checking the area, Officer Larson located the vehicle on East Avenue at the Bald Hill intersection as it pulled into the Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot. Officer Larson stopped the vehicle and met with the driver, identified as Cindy Ogando, 34, of 49 Lillian Avenue, Apt. 2, Providence.

Advised of the reason for the stop, Ogando stated that she had taken merchandise but had put it back. Officer Vargas then arrived on scene with the store’s security officer, who according to the report identified Ogando as being in the store and fleeing.

Ogando was issued a summons on scene for one count of misdemeanor shoplifting.

POSSESSION

Officer Derek Mourato was traveling west on Centerville Road on November 2 around 2 a.m. when he observed a vehicle with a brake light out and a rear license plate not securely fastened and hanging on an angle.

After stopping the car the officer spoke with the driver, whom he identified as Derek Mastrofine, 18, of 159 Knotty Oak Road in Coventry. While speaking, Officer Mourato smelled a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

When asked, Mastrofine admitted that he had “two roaches” in a cup holder. He then stated after additional questioning that he had more in the glove compartment and produced a plastic bag containing a green leafy substance. Officer Mourato asked Mastrofine if he had a medical marijuana card, and he stated he did not.

Mastrofine was issued a violation for possession of marijuana, one ounce or less, and issued a court date. According to the officer, he did not appear to be under the influence and could safely operate his vehicle. He was eventually released from the scene without further incident.

The marijuana was brought to police headquarters, where it tested positive and weighed in at 12 grams. It was later stored as evidence.
