DRIVING UNDER
THE INFLUENCE

A driver who recently told police officers “[Expletive] this. Just tow my [expletive] car and arrest me. I’m not going to do any of this, I refuse” was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence.
Officer Derek Mourato was traveling westbound on Centerville Road on February 4 around 1 a.m. when he observed the car in front of him swerving in and out of its lane. He then conducted a traffic stop in the parking lot of T.G.I Friday’s and identified the driver as Charles Mitchell, 25, of 28 Pond Street, Apt. 2 in West Warwick.
Upon speaking with Mitchell, the officer immediately detected the odor of alcohol emanating from the car. When asked if he had been drinking that evening, Mitchell stated, “Yeah, I had a few shots of Henney.” The officer continued to detect alcohol coming from Mitchell’s breath and observed that his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot and watery. According to the report, Mitchell at first agreed to take a series of standardized sobriety tests.
Officer Mourato then asked Mitchell to follow the tip of his pen with his eyes only and was met with only a stare. Mitchell then refused to participate any further and began yelling and screaming at the officer. Based on his training and experience, along with his interactions with the driver, Officer Mourato determined that Mitchell was impaired and was unfit to operate a motor vehicle safely.
Mitchell was placed under arrest and continued to yell and shout profanities before being transported to police headquarters. His car was then towed, and at the station Mitchell refused to take a chemical breathalyzer test. He was issued a court summons for driving under the influence, first offense, refusal to submit to a chemical breathalyzer test and laned roadway violations. He was later released to a sober adult.

SHOPLIFTING
On February 6 around 5:45 p.m., Officer Ryan Lancaster responded to the Bald Hill Road Walmart for a report of a shoplifting. While en route, the officer was advised by dispatch that the suspect was in custody of the loss prevention department.
Arriving at the scene, the officer met with the suspect, identified as Simone Murphy, 46, of 255 Elm Street in North Attleboro, and she was read her rights. The officer then questioned Murphy, who stated she had concealed multiple DVDs in her purse and then walked out of the store with the intention of stealing those items to sell and then use the money to support her habit.
A loss prevention employee stated he had witnessed the suspect select the DVDs and conceal them before leaving the store. He stated he stopped her outside and that she was cooperative. A total of 10 movies were taken, valued at $167.70. The employee advised that the store wished to pursue charges and have Murphy no trespassed from the store, according to the report.
Mitchell was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where she was charged with one count of shoplifting. She was unable to produce the $250 for bail and was held for court.

SUSPENDED LICENSE
While on routine patrol on February 2 at approximately 4:36 p.m. observing traffic at a fixed post on Elmwood Avenue, Officer John Zaborski observed a white sedan with a male operator who was not wearing his seatbelt. A traffic stop was then conducted, and the operator was identified as Joseph Ferreira, 56, of 17 Barnstable Road in Cranston.
Background checks were conducted, and it was discovered that Ferreira’s license was suspended and that he had one previous suspended license charge. The vehicle also came back as having a suspended registration for lack of inspection.
Ferreira was issued a violation for a suspended license, no seatbelt, an insurance violation and for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended registration. His vehicle was towed and his license plates seized.

WARRANT
Officer James Wenneman was traveling east on Ives Road on February 1 around 5:30 p.m. when he clocked a vehicle traveling at 48 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone. A traffic stop was then initiated.
The driver, later identified as Kayvan Castellanos, 22, of 33 Collins Avenue, Apt. 1 in East Greenwich, provided his registration and proof of insurance but did not have his license with him, according to the report. Background checks discovered a warrant for Castellanos out of the Coventry Police Department for depositing a fraudulent check and then withdrawing $2,020.
Castellanos was taken into custody for the warrant and transported to police headquarters while his passenger took possession of the vehicle.

FELONY
SHOPLIFTING

Officer Mitchel Voyer was dispatched to the Warwick Mall Nordstrom Rack on February 7 for a report of a shoplifter in custody.
According to the police report, Officer Voyer met with a loss prevention agent who said she had John Vitale, 50, of 160 Broad Street in Providence in custody. She stated she observed Vitale enter the store through the mall entrance, walk to the jewelry rack and select 16 Alex & Ani bracelets valued at $466.61 before exiting the store making no attempt to pay.
Background checks were run that revealed Vitale had four active warrants for failure to appear, receiving stolen goods, fraud and obtaining money under false pretenses under $1,500. He was arrested and transported to police headquarters, where he was charged with one count of felony shoplifting due to the fact that he had a prior shoplifting conviction from 2014. He was held for court in the morning.
