SHOPLIFTING
Officer Julio Benros reported a shoplifting in progress at the TJ Maxx store on Bald Hill Road on Jan. 30. He said dispatch advised him that there was a woman inside the store who was about to leave with a quantity of merchandise that she had not paid for. He said Officer Joel Thomas was out in the parking lot with a male suspect who attempted to return some stolen merchandise for cash but the female accomplice had left the store. The loss prevention people told police they were familiar with this man and woman and that their mode of operation consisted of her stealing the stuff and him returning it for cash or credit. He said they learned she was in a brown Honda with Connecticut plates and he found her in the passenger seat of the car, with the engine running. Benros said he ordered the woman out of the car and brought her for a show-up where a loss prevention agent told him she was the shoplifter they watched inside the store. He said they didn’t find any other goods in the car but did find some items generally used by crack cocaine users. Lucia B. Dellernia, 49, of 372 Rockville Rd. in Voluntown, CT, and Dennis Mayotte, 43, of 349 Salem Tpke. in Bozrah, CT. were arrested and taken to headquarters. Mayotte was charged with receiving stolen goods and Dellernia was charged with shoplifting and both were released with summonses.
A Coventry woman was charged with shoplifting and conspiracy to shoplift on Jan. 31 after police reviewed surveillance video at the Kohl’s store in the Rhode Island Mall. Officer Eric Lima reported he was dispatched to the store but later diverted to a Warwick address when he learned the suspect left in a car that was registered to someone on Baldwin Road. He said the owner of the car admitted it was his car but that his stepson borrowed it that day and he did not know where he was. He also told him that the woman described by loss prevention at the store was a friend of his and gave Lima her name and that he would contact police if they heard from the couple. He said he went back to the store and viewed the surveillance, which showed the female taking a pocket watch out of its package and concealing it on her person. Lima said he got a number to call for the female suspect and told her to come back to the store along with the stepson. He said they did arrive and she and the stepson were arrested. Dana Corrado, 46, of 46 Capwell Ave. in Coventry was charged with shoplifting and conspiracy and David J. Silveira, 22, of 231 Baldwin Rd. was charged with conspiracy to shoplift. Corrado was later released on $2,000 surety bail. Silveira was released with a summons.

DUI AND REFUSAL
Officer Nicholas Reay reported he was on patrol with Officer Gilda Fortier around 8 p.m. on Jan. 26 when they spotted a car operating erratically on Warwick Avenue. He said they watched the car cross out of its travel lane and almost hit them and then change lanes without a directional and almost hit another car as it turned onto Atlantic Avenue. He said they stopped it near Fillmore Street and he noticed that the driver appeared to be under the influence and smelled of alcohol. He said she admitted that she had been out with some fellow schoolteachers earlier that evening and had been to O’Rourke’s and then Twin River. He said she mentioned a number of times that she was a teacher and they were holding her up. He said the driver tried to look away from the officers, to avoid showing signs of drinking, like her bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. He said she agreed to do a field sobriety test and she failed it. He said she also avoided giving a proper breath sample on the portable tester until she finally did and it registered .149 blood alcohol content. He said the woman got more and more uncooperative after they got to headquarters and she raised her skirt in her cell and urinated on the floor and gave Reay and Fortier the finger and said [Exlpetive] you! You’re going to have to clean this up now. Look what you did!” Sgt. Brian Mulcahey reported that they monitored the woman in the cell. Mulcahey said they were in the report room when they were dispatched to her cell and found her with her shirt off and they took the shirt away from her for fear she was going to hurt herself with it and then had her transported to Kent Hospital for evaluation. Victoria A. Bierenday, 57, of 940 Namquid Dr. was charged with DUI and refusal and left in the care of the hospital.
Asked yesterday about Bierenday, School Superintendent Peter Horoschak confirmed that she is a teacher at Wyman School. He said she is no longer in the classroom.
Officer John Curley said he was on patrol around 12:10 a.m. on Jan. 28 when he saw a car make an exaggeratedly wide turn onto Airport Road from Post Road and cross over the center lines before accelerating past the speed limit. He said he pulled the car over and said the driver smelled of alcohol and appeared to be under the influence. He said the driver failed a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters where he registered a .188 and a .179 blood alcohol content on the breath test. Nicolas A. Fayne, 22, of 61 Franklin St. in East Providence was charged with DUI and later released with a summons to a sober adult.

Probably an exaggerated police report which shows that woman having had a bad night. An example of the importance of not drinking and driving. Could have been me on any given weekend. Thank God for recovery, love, kindness and forgiveness as well as the importance of caring for family and friends through hard times and mistakes made. I'm grateful for identifying with the human part of life.

My wife and I saw Mrs. B. the other day...As far as I am concerned this woman is a talented teacher. Because my son learned so much in her second grade class, and had a positive experience,, my wife wanted to get together with her and her daughter at the beach over the summer.. She was skilled in teaching and sent home outstanding student work.....one writing description of "My Mother" began llike this...There in front of me stood my kind, generous and loving mother. Her eyes sparkled blue and her smile was friendly., and continued..which made my wife cry. We were always welcome in the classroom and her students and learning were her focus and priority. The Beacon should appologize to her for the negative and biased publicity.
