SHOPLIFTING
Officer Matthew Higgins reported a shoplifting in progress call that resulted in multiple charges for a Providence man on Oct. 7. He said police arrived to see two men suspected of being in cahoots with a shoplifter inside get out of their car and start walking toward the Warwick Mall around 5:10 p.m. He said they ordered the men back to the car and frisked them. Macy’s loss prevention agents identified Rene D. Rossi, 19, of 177 Pocasset Ave. as one of three suspects in the store earlier. Higgins said a search of Rossi’s car produced at least a gram of marijuana and two jackets identified as merchandise stolen from the Sports Authority earlier. He was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of stolen goods and conspiracy to shoplift. Two juveniles who were arrested with him were also charged.
Kathleen Loparto, 49, of 249 Chapel St. in Lincoln was charged with shoplifting at Macy’s on Oct. 7 after loss prevention told police she took items from housewares and the men’s department and concealed them in a bag while she was in a fitting room and then attempted to leave without paying for the goods. They said she took kitchen tools, underwear, warm-up pants and shirts worth a total of $215.42. She was later released with a summons.

EMBEZZLEMENT
A Warwick woman was charged with embezzling money from the Burger King at 2615 Post Road on Oct. 3. Officer Paul White reported that he spoke with a manager there who told him she was in the process of doing her own internal audit of an employee who was still on the premises. She said an assistant manager reported that the employee’s cash was short $19.20 and she was acting “jumpy” earlier and had asked to leave. They said they did the audit of her drawer and then reviewed video of her crumpling a $20 bill and putting it in her pocket. Amanda Andreoni, 33, of 59 Keller Ave. was taken to headquarters where she was charged with embezzlement and then transported to District Court for arraignment.

POSSESSION
Officer Matthew Moretti reported he was entering the parking lot at the Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard around 9:35 p.m. on Oct. 3 when he saw another car coming out at a high rate of speed. He said he also noticed it had an expired registration, so he pulled it over near the entrance of Route 95 North. He said the driver was moving around nervously in the car as he approached and immediately told him he had a warrant out for unpaid fines and was speaking very fast. He said the man gave him a Rhode Island ID instead of a license. He said he patted the man down and found a knife concealed under his shirt and furtively dropped a packet of white powder from his pocket as they were walking to Moretti’s cruiser. He said he also found $364 in cash in his pockets, rolled up in a style associated with drug dealing and stashed in different pockets, to separate personal funds from drug money.
He said an inventory search of the vehicle turned up a baggie of what looked like marijuana in the console. It tested positive, and so did the white powder. Thomas Morrison, 51, of 18 Kipling St. in Providence was charged with possession of cocaine, marijuana and driving on a suspended license.

DUI AND REFUSAL
Officer Stephen Major said he arrested a Warwick man on Oct. 4 for refusing a chemical test and for possession of marijuana after three civilians stopped him on Bald Hill Road to keep him from proceeding to drive while he was obviously under the influence. He said the three women who stopped him said he was driving erratically on Bald Hill Road and fallen to the ground and they did not let him get on the motorcycle again. He said he spoke with the man who smelled of alcohol and said he was riding the bike earlier. He said the driver refused to take a field sobriety test and was arrested. He said he patted him down and found a green leafy substance in his pocket that looked like marijuana and test positive for that drug. Major said the man frequently told him he was a “Wietnam war veteran,” as opposed to a Vietnam vet. Michael K. Darsch, 53, of 116 Wood St. was charged with possession and refusal because Major never actually saw him driving the motorcycle.
Officer Stephen Major reported he was on a traffic post in Apponaug around 10:10 p.m. on Sept. 24 when he saw an SUV going the wrong way on Veterans Memorial Drive and continuing the wrong way on Post Road. He said he activated his siren and blocked the road while he had her turn the vehicle around in the right direction and pulled it over at Lockhart Ave. He said the driver appeared to be intoxicated and could barely pronounce West Greenwich when he asked her where she was coming from. He said she failed the field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters where she refused to take a breath test. Cheryl D’Amico, 47, of 14 Lexington Ave. in Cranston was charged with DUI, refusal and going the wrong way on a one-way street. She was later released to a sober adult.
Officer Daniel DiMaio reported he was on patrol on Oct. 6 when he saw a car fail to stop at the stop line at Maryland Avenue and Post Road and stopped where it was blocking traffic in the northbound lane and causing abrupt stops by other motorists. He said he pulled the car over after watching it proceed erratically onto Route 37. He said the driver looked intoxicated and smelled moderately of alcohol but refused to admit he had any drinks. He said the driver refused to complete a field sobriety test and was arrested for suspicion of drunk driving. DiMaio said he called a tow for the car and an inventory search turned up a cooler of Sam Adams Octoberfest beer in the trunk. He said he asked the man 10 times to take a breath test at headquarters and he 10 times avoided answering and made other irrelevant comments before DiMaio marked it as a refusal when he finally answered. Zachary J. Ferguson, 22, of 14 Sebille Rd. in Smithfield was charged with traffic violations, DUI and refusal.
Officer Christian Vargas reported an accident on West Shore Road around 10 p.m. on Sept. 28. He said one of the drivers was still sitting in the car with the engine running before he got out and stumbled as if he was intoxicated. He said his speech was slurred and he swayed where he stood. He said Gary Louis Roy, 49, of 107 Larkin Ave. could not finish the field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters. Vargas said Roy admitted he had taken his prescribed painkillers and muscle relaxants when he started drinking earlier. Vargas said he blew a .144 and a .145 blood alcohol content (BAC) on the breath test. He was charged with DUI and later released to a sober adult.
Officer Timothy Kenyon reported stopping a Ford Explorer for swerving around Airport Road at a very slow speed around 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 1. He said she was talking on her cell phone and ignored him when he came to her window until he loudly told her he was there. He said she looked surprised and looked and acted drunk and had to hold onto her car getting out for the field sobriety test, which she failed. He said police were looking for her phone when they found marijuana and a glass pipe in the woman’s car. Stephanie Darosa, 24, of 70 John St. in Warwick was charged with DUI after she blew a .170 and a .167 BAC on the breath test at headquarters. She was charged with DUI and possession of marijuana and later released with a summons.

Stephanie Darosa again? She was just arrested Aug 30, according to your Police Log. Take her license away already, before she kills someone! Enough is enough!
