SHOPLIFTING

A 40-year-old Providence man was charged with felony shoplifting on April 17 after loss prevention at Nordstrom Rack in Warwick Mall told police he was seen selecting nine items from their racks and concealing them before leaving the store without paying for the goods. Hidayat Ullah Sami, of 754 Broad St., was charged with being a habitual offender and was remanded to the ACI when he could not pay the $10,000 surety bail.

A Cranston couple was arrested and charged with shoplifting at the Hobby Lobby on Bald Hill Road on April 13 after an employee at the store told police he saw the male partner pocket a pair of ear buds, two packs of batteries and a magnifying glass before meeting up with his wife, who took two mosaic containers out of her shopping cart and concealed them in her purse. Robert A. “Bobby” Rossi, 67, of 60 Perkins St., Cranston, and Sheila Rossi, 63, of the same address, were taken to headquarters and charged with shoplifting and later released with summonses for District Court.

Paula C. Martins, 37, of 51 Purchase St., East Providence, was charged with shoplifting at Macy’s in Warwick Mall on April 13 after loss prevention told police they observed Martins and her daughter selecting merchandise in the store before Martins concealed fur items worth $425.30 and left the store without paying for the concealed goods. Officer Scott Chanthaphouvong reported that he was prepared to charged Martins and her 20-year-old daughter with shoplifting when the daughter claimed she knew nothing of her mother’s intentions and her mother took full responsibility for the thefts. Martins was later released with a summons.

Officer Michelle Caron reported arresting a 75-year-old Providence woman at Nordstrom Rack in Warwick Mall on April 13 after loss prevention told her they saw her select a toddler’s dress and a woman’s brown shirt and tear the tags off and then conceal them in a Nordstrom shopping bag before leaving the store without paying for the goods. Caron said loss prevention alerted her to a large amount of money in Capuano’s purse and Caron said she counted the money in front of the camera at headquarters and then returned $10,133 in cash to the woman, along with a summons for District Court charging her with stealing $39.95 worth of merchandise.

Kanyona Towns, 20, of 158 Roger Williams Ave., Providence, was charged with concealing $94.69 worth of baby items from the Walmart on Bald Hill Road on April 12 before she walked out of the store without paying for the goods. She was later issued a summons and released from headquarters.

DOMESTIC DUI

Officer Michelle Caron reported she was dispatched to Cowesett Hills Apartments around 12:30 p.m. on April 9 for a report of a man assaulting a woman there. She said she was en route to the address when dispatch advised that a man and a woman left the complex in a black Nissan Sentra driven by a man named “Derek.” She said she found the car heading south on Post Road and pulled it over near 4619 Post Rd. She said the driver told her his name was “Thomas White” and she noticed that he had slurred speech and watery eyes and appeared to be intoxicated. She said she also noticed that the female passenger was crying. She said she took the car keys from the driver and then walked around to speak with the passenger. The passenger got out of the car and said she was not assaulted but she was very upset because her boyfriend, of about one year, insisted on driving even though he was drunk. She said they argued about it but no assault took place. Caron said she was keeping an eye on the driver as she interviewed the female and noticed he had a pocketknife attached to his waistband. She said she told him to throw the knife on the passenger side floor where she could pick it up. She said she then got him out of the car for a field sobriety test. She said the driver told her he had taken antibiotics earlier and nothing else. She said he told her he might have taken something that was “alcohol based” but did not explain that very well. She said he did smell strongly of alcohol and failed the field sobriety test. She said he also refused a breath test at headquarters. Derek Bassett, 21, of 9 Courtland Dr., Narragansett, was charged with DUI, refusal and obstructing an officer. Court records reveal a number of priors, including breaking and entering, a previous DUI, domestic disturbances and a firearms charge. He was later released on $5,000 surety bail.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Jamey Petit reported he was dispatched to Metro Center Boulevard around 1:50 a.m. on April 19 for a man passed out behind the wheel of a red car in the roadway. Petit said he found the Honda Civic stopped in the travel lane with the stick shift in neutral but without the brake on. He said he reached in, took the keys and set the parking brake before attempting to wake the driver. He said the driver smelled of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated. He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test that he failed. The driver was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. Kenneth Pierce, 22, of 50 Winter St., Warwick, was charged with DUI, refusal and traffic violations and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Matthew Moretti reported seeing a car cross the double yellow line on Airport Road around 9 p.m. on April 12 and clocked the car at 56 miles per hour before he pulled it over near Unity Court. He said the driver admitted, “I had two,” when he was asked about drinking. Moretti said he stopped the field sobriety test for the driver’s safety when the driver had to be caught to keep from falling on the one-leg stand part of the test. Moretti said Michael J. Brennan, 62, of 600 Cole Farm Rd., Warwick, refused a portable breath test at the scene and refused a breath test at headquarters. He was later released to a sober adult.
