The employee said he called police when he saw the same man return the next day. Police found the man in the Subaru in the parking lot and arrested him for the theft of the $45.98 bottle of brandy the day before. Alfred Masse, of 113 Dunedin St., was booked and then later released with a summons.

Police were back at Macy’s on May 26 for a Cranston woman charged with shoplifting 10 pieces of miscellaneous jewelry worth $910. Loss prevention said they had video of Melinda S. Police were dispatched to Sears at Rhode Island Mall on May 27 for a Cranston woman they said was leaving the parking lot after they saw her concealing items and then walk out of the store and get into her car before they caught up with her. Officer Stephen Major said he traced the plate and called the phone number associated with it. He said the registered owner answered and told him her mother was using the car that day. Major said he told her there was video surveillance of her mother shoplifting at Sears and to have her come back to the store immediately. Major said the owner did contact her mother and told her to go back to the store, where Major was waiting for her. He said the woman denied taking anything, but when he told her she was captured on video she replied, “Ah, you do what you gotta do.” Nancy J.
