SHOPLIFTING

Police arrested two women at the Walmart store on Post Road on May 29 after loss prevention at the store told police they saw three women moving around the store, two of which took merchandise without paying for it. Police said one woman, identified as Brianna Ziobrowski, 20, of 101 Lake Shore Dr., Warwick, took a backpack from a display and put it on. A second woman, identified as Danielle R. Degnan, 20, of 314 Post Rd., Warwick, concealed items in her handbag, including men’s shorts, T-shirts and socks, before leaving the store by the garden shop entrance, where they were stopped by police who were waiting for them after being called by loss prevention. Loss prevention told police the third woman was not involved in the shoplifting and was let go. Degnan and Ziobrowski were later released from headquarters with summonses.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Stephen Major reported he was on patrol in Apponaug around 10 p.m. on May 27 when a car stopped and the driver told him a possibly drunk driver was tailgating him. Major said he then saw the suspect car and began to follow it. He said he saw the car straddle the lane markings and almost hit another vehicle before he pulled it over. He said he told the driver why he was stopped and the driver apologized for his driving. He said the man appeared to be under the influence and smelled of alcohol. He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test and he failed it. He was taken to headquarters, where he refused a breath test. Jerome G. Biern, 60, of 81 Vinton Ave., Cranston, was charged with DUI, refusal and laned roadway violations and later released to a sober adult.

Officer John Larivee reported he was doing a DUI detail around 11 p.m. on May 25 when he was dispatched to an accident on Longmeadow Avenue. Dispatch informed him a car struck a parked car. Larivee said he arrived and found that the driver appeared to be under the influence and smelled strongly of alcohol. He said the man told him he was trying to light a cigarette when he hit the parked car. He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test and he failed. He said Kevin M. Dickie, 21, of 99 Briarcliff Ave., Warwick, was taken to headquarters, where he refused a breath test. He was charged with DUI, refusal and laned roadway violations and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Quentin Tavares reported he was on patrol around 7 a.m. on May 25 when he was dispatched to an accident without injuries at the Burger King on Bald Hill Road. He said the first driver told him he was driving north on Bald Hill Road when the other vehicle exited the Burger King and hit his passenger side wheel and fender and forced him into the turning lane. He said the other driver appeared to be intoxicated and mumbled and smelled of alcohol. He said he asked the driver if he had been drinking and the man told him he “had a few drinks at home” around 11 a.m. He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test that he failed and then had him blow into a portable breath analyzer. He said he registered a .128 on the analyzer and a picture was taken of the result. Timothy K. Malone, 28, of 49 Woodmount St., Providence was taken to headquarters, where he refused an Intoxilyzer test. He was held for the next session of District Court as a probation violator. He was assessed $1,000 surety bail for DUI and refusal the next day and then remanded to the ACI.

Officer Daniel DiMaio reported he was on patrol around 1:45 a.m. when he clocked an SUV doing 63 miles per hour on Warwick Avenue. He said he turned around and followed the SUV onto Sandy Lane and into the McDonald’s parking lot, where it refused to stop until it was in the drive-through lane. He said he told the driver to pull out of the drive-through and into the lot. He said he told the driver why he was being stopped and he said, sarcastically, “There’s no way I was doing 63 miles per hour. No way. Absolutely not.” He said the driver had bloodshot eyes, slurred his speech and smelled of alcohol. He said he asked him where he was coming from and he pointed back and said, “That party over there.” He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test and he failed it, all the while complaining about “[Expletive] Warwick cops,” and continued to call them names and insisting he “is not the real criminal.” He said the driver continued his obscenities all the way to headquarters and refused to cooperate. He said the driver refused to sit down and “violently pointed his finger’ at DiMaio and was taken to the ground and put in handcuffs but continued verbally abusing officer and refusing to sign anything or take a breath test. Zachary Albertson, 23, of 144 Lewiston St., Warwick, was charged with DUI, refusal, disorderly conduct and speeding and later transported to Kent Hospital for detox.

Officer Geoffrey Waldman reported he was dispatched to a rollover accident at Hope and Longmeadow Avenues around 3 p.m. on May 20. Witnesses told police the driver of the pickup truck involved in the accident ran away down Longmeadow and Waldman said the driver was located and detained by Sgt. Kyle Kettelle in front of 90 Elmdale Ave. Waldman said he went to Elmdale, who told him the driver claimed he fled because he didn’t want to go to jail. Sgt. Kettelle said the driver also claimed he did check on the man who was driving the other vehicle before he fled the scene and said it was the other driver’s fault for running a stop sign. He said he also told Waldman the driver smelled of alcohol and told Waldman to give the driver a field sobriety test. He said the driver stopped before the test was complete and said he “couldn’t do it anymore.” Waldman said he took Eduard C. Brum, 51, of 43 Junction St., Warwick, to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. He was charged with felony DUI, second offense, refusal, second offense, because of a DUI and refusal arrest in April, driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of an accident.

Police were dispatched to the area of Centerville Road and Commonwealth Avenue around 7:30 p.m. on May 27 for a suspected drunk driver in a Ford pickup with red lettering. Officer Nicholas DiNardo said they found the truck as it was turning into the Royal Crest Apartments without using a directional or using caution when cutting across traffic from the other direction. He said they stopped the truck inside the apartment complex and noticed that the driver appeared to be drunk and smelled of alcohol. DiNardo said he asked the driver to step out of the truck for some field sobriety tests but the man refused to get out of the truck and refused to take a field sobriety test. DiNardo said he eventually got out of the truck but continued to refuse tests. He was taken to headquarters, where he did take a breath test. DiNardo said he registered a .247 and a .236 blood alcohol content on the breath test. Mark Moore, 45, of 31 Cedar Pond Dr., was later released with a summons to a sober adult.
