MISSING FISH

Officer Manuel Pacheco reported a bronze statue of a fish went missing from the beach on Promenade Avenue in Buttonwoods on June 18. The owners told Pacheco they went away for the Father’s Day weekend and noticed that the fish was in its usual place. He said they did not notice it was missing until they went walking the evening after they got home. The owner described the fish as being about 6 feet long and weighing about 200 pounds empty. He said he filled the hollow sculpture with stones for ballast, which brought the weight up to about 450 pounds. Pacheco said he looked at the site of the statue and saw around five rocks and the owner said they were some of the rocks he put inside. The owner told Pacheco the fish was well known in the neighborhood and he had no idea who would have taken it. No suspects or witnesses. The report was forwarded to detectives.

TAILLIGHT OUT

Officer Quentin Tavares reported he was on patrol around 4:30 p.m. on June 24 when he was about to pull a car over for a warning about a taillight being out when he noticed the driver was not wearing her seat belt. He said he pulled the car over at Inskip BMW on Bald Hill Road. He said a check revealed that the car was actively registered to the driver but her license was suspended and there was a warrant out for her for failure to appear for a suspended license charge in District Court. Lauren R. Proctor, 20, of 327 Cowesett Ave. in West Warwick was charged with driving on a suspended license and not wearing a seat beat. She was transported to the ACI when she failed to come up with bail money.

PIPES STRIPPED

Officer Matthew Higgins reported meeting with a representative of Bank of America at a house on Lakewood Avenue on June 24. The woman told Higgins the bank owned the unoccupied house and she came there that day to secure the house when she noticed the back door had been forced open and the copper pipes around the boiler and heater in the basement and the copper pipes under the kitchen sink were gone. Nothing else was missing. No suspects or witnesses. The copper was estimated to be worth $300.

SHOPLIFTING

Two Providence women were arrested and charged with shoplifting at the Wal-Mart on Bald Hill Road on June 25. Loss prevention told police the woman took some computer cleaning supplies and a cell phone from the electronics department and concealed them before attempting to leave without paying for the goods. Katia Escobar, 25, and Jacquelyn Sosa, 21, both of 102 Unit St. in Providence, were charged. Escobar was released with a summons. Sosa was held for the bail commissioner for want of proper identification.

Officer Tammy Mello reported she was sent to Macy’s in the Warwick Mall for a man being held for shoplifting there. She said loss prevention told her they watched the man move through the men’s department selecting designer T-shirts men’s briefs and concealing them in his backpack before he grabbed two Godiva candy bars and walked out without paying for anything. The loss prevention agent said the suspect had a hat that he claimed was his and was a gift to him, but the loss prevention agent pointed out that the cardboard insert and the price tag were still in the $25 Nautica hat. Mark Redding, 48, of 160 Broad St. in Providence was charged with shoplifting and later released with a summons.

A Cranston man was charged with shoplifting at the Wal-Mart on Bald Hill Road on June 24 after loss prevention at the store told police they saw him remove the packaging off two DVDs and conceal the discs in his sweatshirt and attempted to walk through the garden shop entrance without paying for them. John Fargnoli, 43, of 9 Farewell St. was later released with a summons.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Hovsep Sarkisian reported he was on patrol around 1:25 a.m. on June 20 when he saw a car in front of him traveling at about 20 miles per hour as it swerved from lane to lane several times before it stopped in the middle of the road for about 15 seconds before Sarkisian turned on his emergency lights and siren to effect a traffic stop. He said he asked the man where he was coming from and the man pointed to the Citizens Bank parking lot and said “Over there” and said he was coming from a Providence nightclub and was looking for a hotel room for himself and the female passenger in his car. Sarkisian said he asked the man to take a filed sobriety test and asked him if there was anything medical that would prevent him from taking a field sobriety test and the man said, “Yeah, I’m cross-eyed.” Sarkisian said he then asked him if he could follow his finger with his eyes and the man said he could. Sarkisian said there was distinct horizontal nystagmus in the man’s eyes, an indicator of intoxication. He said he also failed the other field sobriety tests and was taken to headquarters where he refused to take a breath test. Carlos M. Ramirez, 37, of 52 Kendall St. in Central Falls was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.
