The Police Log is a digest of reports filed by the Warwick Police.

“PROVOCATIVE”

A teacher at the Martin School on Toll Gate Road told Officer Kevin McGuire she came to the school that morning and found that someone had broken some of the stuff and then moved the playground equipment into “provocative arrangements.” McGuire said the equipment included a water table and two large plastic hippos worth a total of $800. McGuire said he asked dispatch to tell the second and third shifts to keep an eye on the playground. No suspects or witnesses.

MISSING MANHOLE

The manager of the Motel 6 called police on July 9 to complain that someone had sprayed graffiti on one of their walls and stole a manhole cover from the back of the building. Officer Zachary Davis reported that she told him she called the city of Warwick and asked what they were going to do about it and informed her that the motel was private property and the city was not responsible for the missing manhole cover or for the graffiti. No suspects or witnesses.

TRIO NABBED

Officer James Wenneman reported he was dispatched to the Wal-Mart on Post Road around 6:45 p.m. on July 9 for a shoplifting in progress. He said he arrived to find the three suspects coming out of the store carrying bags who fled when they saw him and ran around some cars in the lot before they were rounded up, along with a female accomplice. Loss prevention at the store told police the trio was filling tote bags with merchandise as they were followed around the store. He said they recovered two $19.94 tote bags and 85 fishing lures worth $893.94 from James Monteiro, 31, of 213 Morris St. in Cumberland; a $9.97 tote, a beer cooler worth $17.97 and $474.73 worth of fishing lures from Justin C. Benjamin, 25, of 25 Cedarwood Dr. in Riverside; and $181.80 worth of fishing lures and $10.48 worth of clothing from Nicole Pacheco, 25, of 41 Thompson Ave. in Bristol. Monteiro was charged with felony shoplifting and the others were charged with misdemeanor shoplifting.

DUI AND REFUSALS

Officer Robert Gauvin reported stopping an SUV at Hillard Avenue and Burt Street around 5 p.m. on June 29 after watching it run three stop signs. He said the SUV stopped in the middle of the street and the driver looked, smelled and sounded inebriated. Gauvin said he was running a check on the driver when Officer Matthew Moretti told him the driver was making furtive movements in the vehicle, apparently hiding or looking for something. Gauvin said he ordered the driver and passenger out of the vehicle and searched it but found nothing suspicious. He said the driver agreed to a field sobriety test and, after several tries, gave a breath sample on a portable breath analyzer, which indicated a .136 blood alcohol content. Joseph Luis Rivera, 34, of 1116 Toll Gate Rd. in Warwick was charged with DUI and refusal when he wouldn’t take a breath test at headquarters. He was later released to a sober adult.

Officer Jason Brodeur reported he was dispatched to Center Court around 5:50 p.m. on July 4 for a report of a DUI in progress. The caller said a man in a blue Ford pickup crashed into someone’s yard and took off toward West Shore Road. Brodeur said he spotted the truck near Benny’s hardware store. He said the truck pulled over into a shrub on Salisbury Street. He said the driver appeared to be drunk and smelled of alcohol. Brodeur said he started a field sobriety test but had to stop it when it looked like the driver would fall down and hurt himself. He said a preliminary test on the portable breath analyzer registered a .203 blood alcohol content. He said the driver was taken to headquarters where he refused to take a breath test. John Manolakos, 62, of 40 Whitford St. in Warwick was charged with DUI (second offense), refusal (first offense), driving an unregistered vehicle and driving on a suspended license. He was taken to Kent Hospital for detox.

Officer Aaron Kay reported seeing a car driving erratically on Sea View Drive around 11 p.m. on July 3. He said it nearly struck two parked cars attempting to turn onto Oakhurst Avenue and he turned onto Oakhurst to stop it but it was already stopped and the driver of the car behind flagged him over. He said the man told him the driver sideswiped his car earlier and he was following it until police arrived. He said the driver of the suspect car appeared to be drunk and smelled of alcohol. He said he gave her a field sobriety test and stopped the test for her safety. He said he took her to headquarters where she told him “There’s no way” she was going to take the test when he asked her about the breath test. She was charged with DUI, refusal, driving an uninsured, unregistered car and laned roadway violation, and Karen L. Boehm, 52, of 63 Pettis Dr. in Warwick was later released to a sober adult.

Officer John Curley reported he was dispatched to an accident between a tree and a car next to St. Timothy’s Church on Warwick Avenue around 9 p.m. on July 7. He said she appeared to be intoxicated and smelled of alcohol and said “Whatever” when he asked her what happened. He said she told him she did not need medical attention and refused to be treated beyond a preliminary examination by Rescue personnel and agreed to take a field sobriety test. He said he stopped the test after she nearly fell down on the one-legged stand and arrested her on suspicion of drunk driving. She was taken to headquarters where she refused to take a breath test. Jo-Anne Clark, 52, of 39 Tarleton St. in Warwick was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Stephen Major reported that several units were told to look for three motorcycles speeding on West Shore Road around 10:30 p.m. on July 3 who were refusing to pull over for a traffic stop. He said he found one of them and pursued it until it pulled over. Major said he asked him why he didn’t pull over for the other officer and he said he “just wanted to go home.” Major said he also denied knowing the name of another suspect that Major saw flee. He said the biker was unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol. He said the rider failed a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters where he refused a breath test. Javier Lopez, 38, of 44 Terrace Ave. in Providence was charged with DUI, refusal, driving without a license and failure to yield to a policeman. He was later released to a sober adult.

Officer Matthew Moretti reported an accident at Post Road and the Airport Connector around 9:50 p.m. on June 30. He said the driver of a Jaguar involved in the accident admitted he had been drinking but was taken away by Rescue on a stretcher and taken to Kent Hospital for further evaluation. He said the driver did show nystagmus but could not do the rest of a field sobriety test. He said Michael J. Paliotta, 43, of 292 Friendship St. in Providence refused to submit to a blood test at the hospital and was charged with DUI and refusal and left with the medical staff.

Officer Christian Vargas reported he was dispatched to an accident at Main Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard around 5:40 p.m. on July 1. He said the driver of one of the cars involved appeared to be under the influence and he had her do a field sobriety test in the parking lot of the Greenwood Inn. He said she told him she couldn’t complete it and she was arrested for suspicion of DUI. He said she told him she “Pleaded the fifth” and refused to take a breath test at headquarters. Lisa V. Mello, 44, of 21 Marvin St. in Warwick was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.
