SHOPLIFTING

A Cranston man was charged with stealing a windshield wiper at the Walmart store on Post Road on Aug. 3. A loss prevention agent told police they saw him take a wiper blade out of its packaging and place his old wiper blade inside the package before walking out of the store without paying for the $9.47 blade. Michael S. Goldman, 26, of 49 Tiffany St., was later released with a summons.

A Cranston woman was charged with shoplifting from the Target store at Warwick Mall on Aug. 1. Loss prevention at the store said they saw her conceal a comforter in a bag and attempt to leave the store without paying for it. They told police they did not expect to recover a variety of household products with the comforter, like air freshener, toothpaste, dental floss, a towel and some toilet paper, for a total of $112.87. Anasia C. Perez, 19, of 861 Reservoir Ave., was later released with a summons.

A North Providence woman was charged with stealing 18 pieces of clothing worth $1,049.88 from the Macy’s store in Warwick Mall on Aug. 3. Loss prevention told police they stopped Amrit Kaur, 31, of 15 Sudbury St., outside after she failed to make any attempt to pay for the goods.

James Weston, 36, of 158 French St., Woonsocket, was charged with shoplifting at the JC Penney store in Warwick Mall on Aug. 3. Loss prevention told police he concealed two pairs of men’s shorts worth $53 and walked out of the store without paying for them. He was later released from headquarters with a summons.

Officer John Curley said he was on a traffic detail around 1:40 p.m. on July 31 when he got a call about a shoplifting in progress at the Walgreens store just up the street on Warwick Avenue. He said he saw the car with Massachusetts plates described by witnesses take a sharp left onto Waldron Avenue. He said he followed it and saw it attempting to turn around on Waldron and stopped it. He said the driver of the car, identified as Alden J. Furgalack, 26, of 46 Patton St., Coventry, admitted he stole the cough syrup, sinus medicine and batteries worth a total of $21.07 in the bag. He was charged with shoplifting at headquarters and later released with a summons.

LARCENIES

A Glass Street man told police someone scattered his papers around the cabin of his Jeep sometime overnight on Aug. 1 He said his iPhone charger, a Swiss army knife and about $3 in change were gone. No witnesses.

A Warwick man came into headquarters on July 28 to complain that someone entered the locker he was using at Healthtrax on Post Road and took a pair of shorts, his wallet, his sunglasses and around $140 in cash from the unlocked locker he used. No witnesses.

A Yates Avenue resident told police someone went into his vehicle outside his house overnight on July 30 and took his iPhone and his MacBook laptop. He said the laptop cost $1,200 and the iPhone $600. No suspects or witnesses. He said the car was unlocked at the time.

An apartment dweller on Narragansett Parkway told police about $10 in cash and the paperwork for her vehicle went missing from her car on July 22. No suspects or witnesses. The case was forwarded to detectives.

A resident of Kiwanee Road told police his iPad mini was stolen from his car sometime overnight on July 26. He told police he found his wallet and cards scattered on the floor of the vehicle that morning and checked closer to learn his iPad was gone, along with $18 in cash. No suspects or witnesses.

A Cranston woman told police she went shopping at TJ Maxx on July 26 and remembered that her wallet was put back in her purse as she left the Target store to go next door to TJ Maxx on Bald Hill Road. She said she was in one of the aisles when two women approached her and started asking her questions about products and other distractions for two or three minutes, but when she looked for her wallet in her purse after that the wallet was missing. She told police she immediately called the credit card companies to cancel the cards as soon as she got home and learned that they had already been used in several places in Warwick, including Best Buy, Macy’s and the Target store to the tune of $2,500, along with the $100 or so in cash that was in the wallet. She gave police a description of the two women and got a copy of the report for her bank.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer John Curley reported a disabled vehicle on Glen Farm Court around 11:20 p.m. on July 27. He said he arrived and put his emergency lights on and saw the driver flail his arms and say, “What the [expletive]?” He said the man behind the wheel was the only person in the car and he smelled strongly of alcohol. He said he asked him out of the car and gave him a field sobriety test that the driver failed. He said the driver was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. He said police also found a bottle of vodka in the car with a little over a quarter of its contents left. Eric D. Okerholm, 41, of 18 Burnside St., Cranston, was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Charles Austin reported he stopped a car that had a flat tire and drifted in and out of its travel lane twice before he pulled it over around 2:20 a.m. on July 26. He said it took all his emergency lights, siren and air horn to pull the car over. He said the woman driving the car appeared to be intoxicated and smelled of alcohol. He said he orderd her out of the car for a field sobriety test and she failed it and said, “She was walking as if she was in a fashion show” and took extra long strides with each step. He said she was taken to headquarters, where she refused to take a breath test. Gloria S. Aguilar, 23, of 85 Bowdoin St., Providence, was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

    All these folks still leaving stuff in unlocked vehicles and lockers. What is their problem? For years, the paper has had stories of kids going through cars and stealing Ipods, wallets, change, and everything else. But people still continue to leave valuables inside their cars. You can't make it up.

    I totally agree Dave... leaving a wallet, 140$$$, sunglasses in an unlocked locker at health Trex..... COME ON MAN WISE UP!!!!! This isn't Bait Car where the thief is baited into stealing a car. Only a small part of me has any sympathy for you at all.
