LARCENY CHARGE

A Warwick man was arrested on Aug. 6 and charged with stealing $25 from a co-worker’s purse at Warwick Liquors on West Shore Road. The co-worker told police she saw the man open her purse and take the money on the store’s video surveillance on July 31 and went to headquarters the next day to file a complaint. Officer Joel Thomas reported that he had an arrest warrant for the man that was executed at the suspect’s house on Aug. 6. He said he found Paul Jackson at home at 469 Church St. and took him into custody without incident and held at headquarters for arraignment in District Court due to a probation violation.

NO ALCOHOL

Officer Robert Gauvin reported he was dispatched to the Stop N’ Go convenience store around 2:50 p.m. on Aug. 3 for a disturbance but was advised en route that the party had left the store by an unknown side street. He said the plate number came back to a Harvard Avenue address and he was on his way there when he saw a car stopped in the middle of the road that was blocking an SUV directly behind it. He said the driver of the SUV was waving his hands and looking frustrated at the car not moving. He said there was a blonde woman behind the wheel and he saw the car lurch forward. He said he got out and told her to get out of the car. He said she stumbled as he ordered her to the side of the road. Gauvin said there was an infant in a car seat on the back seat of the car. He said the woman appeared disheveled and was pulling her hair and scratching at her arms and legs; her eyes were darting in several directions; she was making smacking motions with her lips; and she was clenching her fists. Gauvin said she bounced from one topic to another and her speech was hard to follow and her pupils were constricted. He said the woman denied driving the car, even though Gauvin saw her behind the wheel and her boyfriend said she had. He said he learned that she had a suspended license and arrested her for that. He said she switched from mood to mood in the back seat of the cruiser, crying about losing her kid one minute and then saying, “Go [expletive] yourself, you [expletive] cop!” He said she then changed her mind and said she would to a field sobriety test, which he gave her, and she failed. He also gave her a test with the portable breath tester and said she registered a .000, indicating she was not drunk. Officer Matthew Moretti, who is a trained drug recognition expert, concluded she was under the influence of some drug other than alcohol, but she refused to have her blood tested.

The child in the car had already been turned over to a sober adult. Christina M. Dori, 26, of 15 Harvard Ave., Warwick, was charged with DUI, refusal and driving on a suspended license.

Gauvin added that there was a beer can and a copper “Choreboy” that Gauvin said “is commonly used to filter and smoke crack cocaine.”

DUI AND REFUSALS

Officer Randy Francis said he was on patrol around 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 6 when he followed a car that was weaving in and out of lanes and crossing the centerlines on Warwick Neck and Samuel Gorton Avenues before he pulled it over on Fairhaven Avenue. He said the driver appeared to be drunk and smelled of alcohol and had trouble putting the paperwork for the car in order. He said the driver failed a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where she refused to take a breath test. Karen A. Martin, 36, of 28 Warwick Neck Ave., was charged with laned roadway violations, DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Aaron Kay reported he followed a car that made a left-hand turn through the red light at Warwick Avenue and Post Road around 1 a.m. on Aug. 9. He said there was a cover over the rear plate that made it difficult to read as he pulled the car over. He said the man appeared to be drunk and smelled of alcohol. He said he gave the man a field sobriety test that he did not perform very well and he arrested him on suspicion of drunk driving and took him to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. Daniel T. Howe, 25, of 29 Parkside Dr., Warwick, was charged with running the light, laned roadway violations, improper display of plates, DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Matthew Moretti reported he was on patrol on Jefferson Boulevard on Aug. 5 when he saw a car swerving between the lanes and going into the fog lane before he pulled it over at the Marriott Courtyard parking lot. He said he asked the woman driving where she was going and she said, “Here,” and started giggling. He said she smelled of alcohol and was unsteady on her feet when he asked her out of the car for a field sobriety test, but he stopped the test before it was completed out of concern for her safety. He said he was taking her to headquarters when she started crying and said she had driven vehicles “in much worse condition than this” and didn’t think she should be arrested. He said she also told him her parents would kill her and she threatened to kill herself. He said he called Sgt. Stephen Fernandes and advised him of the situation and he told him to take her to Kent Hospital instead of headquarters so she could be evaluated. He said she refused to take a chemical test at the hospital. Tyler L. Cunha, 25, of 175 Hardig Rd., Warwick, was charged with laned roadway violations; DUI, second offense; refusal, second offense; and then left in the care of the hospital staff.

Officer Thomas Duncan reported he stopped a car that was operating erratically on West Shore Road around 1:40 a.m. on Aug. 5. He said the car was doing about 15 miles per hour on Oakland Beach Avenue before he pulled it over. He said the driver appeared to be drunk and smelled strongly of alcohol. He said she stumbled out of the car for the field sobriety test, which she failed, and he arrested her on suspicion of drunk driving. Barbara J. Jiminez-Paulin, 48, of 349 Pequot Ave., Warwick, blew a .164 on both tests and was charged with DUI. She was later released to a sober adult.
