SHOPLIFTING

Officer John Zaborski reported a call about a shoplifting in progress around 5 p.m. on Oct. 3. Dispatch said a female shoplifting suspect had fled the Stop & Shop in Meadowbrook in a Cadillac Escalade with two children in the vehicle. Zaborski said he spotted the vehicle cutting across the Walgreen’s parking lot onto Sandy Lane heading east. He said he followed the Escalade down Morning Glory Drive and onto Social Drive where he conducted a vehicle stop. Zaborski said he asked her why she was driving so fast and she told him she had a confrontation with a Stop & Shop employee.

Zaborski said she explained that she wanted to pay for some items with cash and other items with her EBT card and the employee told her she would have to go into the back room if she wished to do that and she told him she “didn’t have time for that” because she was in a hurry and had kids with her and that she left all the items she didn’t pay for and said “it was just a misunderstanding on the guy at Stop & Shop.”

In the meantime, Officer Jason Brodeur reported he was at the Stop & Shop and a loss prevention employee showed him video of the woman taking make-up items and placing them into a baby stroller and then leaving the store without paying for the concealed stuff. It also showed her being followed out of the store by the loss prevention agent and then coming back into the area between the two automatic doors and taking the concealed items out of the stroller and putting them on the floor and exiting again. Tanya Dannielle Carl, 26, of 39 Pettis Dr. was arrested and charged with shoplifting and later released with a summons.

A loss prevention agent at the Target store in the Warwick Mall told police she saw two women select a number of pairs of underpants and then conceal them in their purses before leaving the store without paying for them. Jaclyn Sweet, 22, of 3 Schofield St. in West Warwick was charged with taking seven pairs worth $51.98 and Sarina Bermudez of 40 Timber Ridge Rd. in Charlestown was charged with taking 11 pairs worth $62.87. They were later released with summonses for District Court.

Officer Stephen Major reported taking a shoplifting suspect into custody on Oct. 2, after loss prevention at Macy’s in the Warwick Mall told him they saw the man taking earrings and bracelets off cards in the jewelry department and palming them as he proceeded to another part of the store to conceal them on his person. Jose Torres, 20, of 84 Hilarity St. in Providence was charged with shoplifting after he left the store without paying for the goods. Major reported that Torres had been arrested in August in Natick, Mass., which made him a possible bail violator in Massachusetts. He was held for the Bail Commissioner.

Police were sent to Kohl’s in the Rhode Island Mall on Oct. 1 to arrest a Cranston man who was accused of stealing that day and another time the week before. Loss prevention at Kohl’s told police they recovered seven watches that the man concealed in a Shaw’s Market bag before leaving the store without paying. They said he was the same man who did a similar theft the week before. Police said Dino L. Celesti, 41, of 42 Charles St. in Cranston also had two other watches that looked brand new and he claimed they belonged to him but also said he didn’t want anything to do with them anymore, including the one that still had the protective plastic film on the case. He was held for arraignment after a trip to Kent Hospital to pick up his medications.

Kohl’s also pressed charges against a Warwick woman on Oct. 1 after telling police they saw her select a number of pieces of jewelry and conceal them in her purse before leaving the store without paying. Melanie H. Fox, 37, of 143 Cottage Grove Ave. in Warwick was charged with stealing $370.25 worth.

Officer Kevin McGuire reported viewing video at the Wal-Mart store on Bald Hill Road that showed a Warwick woman scratching price codes off or opening boxes of $106.26 worth of cosmetics before concealing them and leaving the store without paying. Tammy R. Leitao, 48, of 6 Lucille St. was processed and then released with a summons for District Court.

ROAD SIGNS

Officer Mark Jandreau reported 10 road sign stands have gone missing from a work site on Bellows St. on Sept. 24. An employee of the contractor told Jandreau the stands were worth an estimated $2,800 and that it was not the first time stuff had been stolen from the site and the man requested more frequent checks on the property after hours. The report was forwarded to detectives.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Thomas Duncan reported he was dispatched to Longmeadow and Riverside Avenues around 1:15 a.m. on Sept. 28 for someone hunched over the steering wheel of a truck. He said the driver’s door was open and the driver’s foot was on the brake and the car was in drive. He said he woke the driver up and ordered him to put the truck in park and had to help him do that. He said the man smelled strongly of alcohol and looked intoxicated. He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test and the driver, who was unsteady on his feet, told him he couldn’t do the test and he should just arrest him. He said he took Wendell Hail Nolan, 55, of 330 Arlington Ave. in Warwick, to headquarters where he registered .198 and .193 blood alcohol content on the breath test. He was charged with DUI and driving on a suspended license. Nolan was later released on $3,000 surety bail and was scheduled to appear in District Court on Sept. 30, due to this being his second arrest for DUI within 10 days.

Officer Charles Austin said he found a man asleep at the wheel of a car at Post Road and the Airport Connector around 1:35 a.m. on Sept. 28. He said a taxi driver flagged down Capt. Kenneth Furtado to report the incident and Furtado asked Austin to conduct a DUI investigation of the driver. Austin said the man was obviously drunk and knew only that he was in Warwick. He said the driver failed a field sobriety test without completing it and was taken to headquarters where he refused to take a breath test. Jason S. Mathieu, 42, of 76 Woodhaven Rd. in Pawtucket was charged with DUI and refusal.

Officer Keri-Ann Leighton-Fialho reported stopping a car she saw traveling left of the center lane on Greenwich Avenue around 12:25 a.m. on Sept. 28. She said she activated her lights and siren and escorted the car to a stop on East Avenue. She said the driver appeared to be drunk and smelled of alcohol. She said he told her he had been to Twin River casino and a bar in Warwick before she stopped him. She said she gave him a field sobriety test that he definitely failed and he was arrested and taken to headquarters where he registered a .173 blood alcohol content twice. David J. Domenico, 25, of 134 Caporal St. in Cranston was charged with DUI and later released with a summons.

Driving an Escalade and using an EBT card. That is the real crime here.
