DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Jamie Petit reported a disabled car in the breakdown lane of Bald Hill Road near McDonald’s around 4:30 a.m. on Oct. 12. He said the front bumper, headlight and driver’s side front tire were gone and there was dirt and grass imbedded in the radiator. He said the motor was running in “park” and the driver looked and smelled drunk. He said he told the man to shut the car off and tell him what happened. He said the man told him he “hit a huge pothole” but could not say where the pothole was and he was coming from a club in Providence and heading for his girlfriend’s house in Franklin, Mass. He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test and he failed it. He said the man did not have a license but he did have a Rhode Island identification card for Erick Gonzales, 32, of 90 Blackamore Ave., Cranston. He said Gonzales registered a .145 and a .138 blood alcohol content on the breath test. He was charged with DUI, no license and operating an unsafe vehicle. He was later released to Kent Hospital for detox.
