DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Jeffrey Taranto reported he was dispatched to Tennessee and Kentucky Avenues around 11:45 p.m. on Oct. 26 for a possibly drunk driver trying to drive away from an accident there. He arrived to find a man in a damaged SUV attempting to get the damaged vehicle to drive away with no success. He said he had the driver turn the vehicle off and get out of the vehicle for a field sobriety test and the man stumbled and swayed when he got out. He said the driver told him he couldn’t do the walk and turn test, saying he would try but he had pins in his ankles and a bad back. He said he asked him to do the one-legged stand but the driver protested that he could not do that either. He said he asked the driver if he knew he was in an accident and the man said he wasn’t sure. He said the driver was taken to headquarters where he registered a .208 and a .217 blood alcohol content on the breath test. Steven M. White, 37, of 152 Pine St. in Warwick was charged with DUI, laned roadway violations and no proof of insurance and then taken to Kent Hospital for detox and evaluation.

Officer Jamie Petit reported he was on patrol around 1:20 a.m. on Oct. 17 when dispatch informed him of a call from a man who said he had just rolled over in his car on Pilla Drive and that he was the only person in the vehicle. Petit said he arrived to find the Subaru resting on its roof and a man standing over a female lying on the ground complaining of pain and a Warwick sergeant who said he already called Rescue for the woman. He said he also met the driver who appeared to be under the influence and smelled of alcohol. He said the man admitted he had some drinks and agreed to take a field sobriety test. He said the man failed the test and was taken to headquarters where he refused to take a breath test. Peter F. Calci Jr., of 24B Prospect Hill Ave. in West Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult. He said the man’s passenger, a 28-year-old Warwick woman, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where she was treated for shoulder pain and a bump on her head.

Officer Zachary Davis reported he was at Taco Bell on Bald Hill Road around 1:25 a.m. on Oct. 26 when he saw a car traveling at a high rate of speed on Bald Hill Road. He said he followed the car and pulled it over after seeing it travel from lane to lane as it sped down Bald Hill Road. He said the driver admitted he had some drinks and appeared to be under the influence and smelled strongly of alcohol. He said he asked the driver if he was aware that he was switching lanes and driving too fast and he admitted he was not aware of his traffic violations but agreed to take a field sobriety test. He said Antonio F. Pires, 45, of 17 Bettez St. in West Warwick failed the field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters where he registered a .203 and a .199 blood alcohol content on the breath test. He was charged with DUI, speeding and laned roadway violations.

Officer James Wenneman reported a two-vehicle accident at 1073 Narragansett Parkway around 5:25 p.m. on Oct. 20. He said there was one woman standing outside of her mini-van with two juvenile males inside. He said he asked her what happened and she said she wasn’t sure. He said he asked if she knew she was in an accident and she did. He said she also said everyone was all right and he noticed that her breath smelled of alcohol and her eyes were glassy and she appeared to be drunk. He said Warwick Rescue arrived and assessed everyone for injuries but no one was injured. Wenneman said the woman agreed to take a field sobriety test and she failed the test. He said he transported her to headquarters and noted that she was crying and called him a “[expletive expletive]” on the way to headquarters. He said she was met by a female officer at headquarters and was searched for weapons before she was asked to take a breath test, which she refused. Amie L. Palumbo, 45, of 63 Todd St. in Warwick was charged with refusal, DUI and driving on a suspended license. He said he also called DCYF to tell them about two juveniles being in the vehicle at the time of the stop. She was later released to a sober adult.

Officer Jason Cooke reported he was dispatched to an accident at Toll Gate and Bald Hill Roads around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 22. He said another officer at the scene told him he saw one of the drivers in action and suspected she might be under the influence. Cooke said he spoke with the woman and noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from her and that her eyes and voice indicated she was intoxicated. He said he asked her to get her license from the car and she tried but she could not find it. He said he then asked her to take a field sobriety test. She did, and she failed the test, according to Cooke. She was taken to headquarters where she refused to take a breath test. Dacia M. Broccoli, 26, of 27 Whitehall Dr. in Warwick was charged with DUI, refusal and tailgating. She was later released on $1,000 surety bail.

COPPER THEFT

The National Grid substation on Cowesett Road had been the target of copper thieves again. The company reported to police that an inspection on the morning of Oct. 24 revealed that copper grounding wires and brackets that would cost $5,000 to replace had been stripped from several pieces of equipment at the site [in spite of the site being reportedly under video surveillance by a private security company].

LARCENY

A customer at Planet Fitness on Pace Boulevard complained to police that he came back to his locker around 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 20 and found the lock broken off his locker and an Army issued assault bag worth $300 was missing. He told police there was noting else of value in the bag. The management at the gym told police they saw no one leave with the bag.

SHOPLIFTING

Officer Brian Murray reported a Woonsocket woman who was arrested at the Target store in the Warwick Mall on Oct. 21. Loss prevention at the store told police the woman, who was known to them from prior incidents at the store, was arrested as she left the store with a carriage containing unpaid-for merchandise. She was taken to headquarters where she was charged with stealing $405 worth of goods this time. Loss prevention told police they saw her go to the toy department to get a pair of scissors and then come back to the electronics section and used the scissors to cut the cable holding a cell phone to the counter and took a watch out of its package and concealed it in the carriage. Linda A. Perini, 62, of 41 Jackson St. in Woonsocket was later released with a summons.
