DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Kevin McGuire reported he was dispatched to a hit-and-run investigation on Toll Gate Road around 10:40 p.m. on Nov. 6. He said West Warwick police were there and said the car they stopped was part of an accident investigation in their town. McGuire said the car had heavy front-end damage consistent with hitting a pole. The West Warwick officer said the woman on the sidewalk was the same person he saw driving the car into Warwick, where he followed her and pulled her over. McGuire said the woman in question admitted she was coming home from a bar in West Warwick when she hit a telephone pole avoiding something in the road. He said he asked her why she left the scene and she said she “just wanted to get home.” He said she appeared to be under the influence and smelled of alcohol. He said he gave the woman a field sobriety test and she failed it. He said Laurie A. Beaulieu, 25, of 150 Brentwood Ave. in Warwick was taken to headquarters where she registered a .114 and a .115 blood alcohol content on the breath test. She was charged with DUI and later released to a sober adult. West Warwick charged her with leaving the scene of an accident.

Officer Hovsep Sarkisian reported stopping a car that was swerving from lane to lane and came back as unregistered around 2 a.m. on Nov. 5. He said the driver had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol and appeared to be drunk. He said he asked if she had any drinks and she said, “I’m not going to lie. I had a couple.” He said the driver failed a field sobriety test and was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. Elizabeth Dwyer, 29, 15 Monongahela Ave. in North Providence, was taken to headquarters where she registered a .237 and a .259 blood alcohol content. Sarkisian said a search incident to arrest turned up a number of narcotic tablets in two Altoids mint containers. Eleven were identified as hydrocodone (325 mgs); 3 Vicodin ES (extra strength 300 mgs.); and three (30 mg.) dextro-amphetamine; all controlled substances requiring a prescription. She was charged with DUI and possession of controlled substances and held for arraignment.

Officer Nicholas DiNardo reported he was on patrol around 9:50 p.m. on Nov. 7 when he came upon an accident at the on-ramp of Route 95 on Centerville Road. He said a state trooper was already working on an accident report and requested that DiNardo do a DUI investigation of the driver who rear-ended another car on the ramp. The trooper said she thought the driver was drunk. DiNardo said the driver was slurring her words and said she was coming from home when he asked and said going home when he asked her destination. He said she then admitted she couldn’t remember her address and said she was not aware of being in an accident. He said he gave the woman a field sobriety test and she failed it. Ashley Gmitra [sic], 26, of 1305 Main Rd. in Tiverton was taken to headquarters, where she refused to take a breath test. She was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Lt. Jamie Calise reported he was doing a traffic detail at a road construction project at Centerville Road and Route 95 around 6:50 p.m. on Nov. 11. He said a pedestrian approached him and told him he had been following another motorist from near the Wal-Mart store in North Kingstown, where he saw the motorist hit a traffic median and then run a red light before getting onto Route 95. He said he and his friend began to follow the car after they called State Police and watched him swerving all over the highway very narrowly avoiding hitting other cars. He said they followed him when he got off at Centerville Road and then cut him off and stopped him where the road construction narrowed to one lane. Calise said he called for another officer and went to the location of the suspect, about 300 feet from where Calise was parked. He said he could see the damage to the undercarriage of the car and parts were hanging from the engine area and the witness’s truck was stopped in front of the car, barring its way. He said he told the driver to turn the car off and the driver just stared at him. Calise said he looked drunk. He said another officer arrived and gave the driver a field sobriety test and the driver failed it. The car was towed and Officer Aaron Kay reported that Nicholas Giuliani, 75, of 13 Trellis Dr. in West Warwick registered a .167 and a .173 blood alcohol content on the breath test at headquarters. He was charged with DUI and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Nicholas Reay said he was on patrol around 10 p.m. on Nov. 4 when he was dispatched to East Avenue for an accident. He said the driver of one of the cars was sitting in her running car with blood around her mouth and on her hands. He said she told him she was not wearing a seat belt when she rear-ended the other car. He said the woman smelled of alcohol, appeared to be drunk and there was a bottle of vodka on the passenger side floor. He said she admitted she drank some vodka before driving home from work. He said she told him she was not seriously injured and agreed to take a field sobriety test. Reay said he stopped the test for her safety when it appeared she might fall. Kayla Duluk, 22, of 35 Hymer St. in Providence, was taken to headquarters where she refused to take a breath test. She was charged with DUI, refusal, failure to maintain a proper interval between vehicles and not wearing a seatbelt.

Officer John Curley reported a three-car accident at Post Road and Atlantic Avenue around 4:50 p.m. on Nov. 4. He said one of the drivers was still in her vehicle with the motor running and she smelled strongly of alcohol. He said she appeared to be drunk and said she wanted to go home even as Warwick Rescue was placing her on a backboard while they assessed her condition. He said the driver refused to take any field sobriety tests and was transported to Kent Hospital for evaluation. He said she refused to allow a chemical test and refused to sign a refusal form but was still charged with DUI and refusal. Sheryl Rabil, 51, of 137 Fair St. in Warwick was left in the care and custody of Kent Hospital staff.
