BUYER BEWARE

A 26-year-old Providence woman told police two men approached her as she was walking into the Wal-Mart store on Post Road on Nov. 26 and told her they had an iPad for sale for $200 and showed her a box that looked like it contained an iPad. She told the men she only had $80 in cash on her and he told her that was fine. She said she gave him the $80 and they followed her for a bit before they walked out of the store. She said she got to her car and opened the box and found some newspaper and bubble wrap but no iPad. Officer Matthew Moretti said he checked with the store but learned they had no surveillance of the transaction. The report was forwarded to detectives.

EMBEZZLEMENT

Officer Paul White reported he went to the CVS store in Meadowbrook on Nov. 22 to take custody of an employee who had admitted he had been stealing hydrocodone pills since 2009. A loss prevention manager for the store showed White closed circuit video of the employee taking two large bottles of pills from a shelf and pouring a number of pills into a small brown bottle he concealed in his pocket before returning the larger bottles to the shelf. The loss prevention manager said they had been conducting an investigation in the wake of an inventory that came up short of 57 hydrocodone tablets between Nov. 11 and Nov. 18. White said he then informed the employee of his rights and the employee said he was willing to talk about the situation. White said he admitted taking the pills shown on the video and admitted that he periodically stole pills from the store since 2009, claiming he suffered from chronic back pain. Loss prevention told White they estimated he had taken about 4,300 pills within that time but only had the video of the one theft that occurred on Nov. 16. Shaun Chevalier, 34, of 57 Waldron Ave. in Cranston was processed at headquarters and later released with a summons for District Court.

SHOPLIFTING

Officer James Michailides reported he went to TJ Maxx on Bald Hill Road around 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 22 to get probable cause to arrest a West Warwick woman who was charged with shoplifting. The loss prevention agent at the store told Michailides she was familiar with the woman from prior incidents when she came to the store attempting to return merchandise without receipts to get money back. She said she saw the woman removed security sensors from some jeans, a sweater and a shirt before concealing the goods in a bag and leaving the store without paying for the goods. The loss prevention person said she confronted the woman outside by calling her name, which she knew from prior contacts, but she refused to return to the store and threw the stolen items on the ground and fled. Michailides said he traced that name to a white Chrysler registered to a Russell Buckley and found the car in the lot. He said he sat on the car for a while, waiting for the suspect to show up. He said he went back to headquarters and did the paperwork for a warrant for Cheryle A. Buckley, 56, of 13 Kathleen Ct. Michailides said she was later located at Chili’s restaurant on Bald Hill Road and taken to headquarters where she was charged with felony shoplifting because of a prior conviction and held for the Bail Commissioner.

A Warwick man was arrested on Nov. 22 after a Jets cap he was accused of stealing from the Diamonds Legends store in the Warwick Mall was recovered from under a car in the parking lot. According to Officer Stephen Major, a Mall security guard and two Warwick police officers pursued the suspect as he threw the cap under a car and “took off running” for the other end of the lot before he was stopped. Trevor M. Imondi, 36, of 1403 Warwick Ave. was charged with shoplifting and later released with a summons.

LARCENY

Officer Joshua Myer reported he spoke with a man who went to the Oakland Beach Public Boat Ramp on Nov. 26 to take his boat out of the water when the trailer broke. He said he left the trailer there overnight and saw that it was gone when he came back the next day. He told Myer it must have been lifted onto a truck because the broken axle made it impossible to drive it away. He said it was a 1995 Norcal trailer worth around $200. No suspects or witnesses.

A Cranston woman told police she was working out at Gold’s Gym on Bald Hill Road on Nov. 27 and returned to her car to find the passenger window smashed out and a black Kenneth Cole purse with a Relic wallet, ATM cards, credit cards, license, passport and iPhone 4S was gone. No suspects or witnesses.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Hovsep Sarkisian reported seeing a 2001 Buick doing a very high speed as it came off the Route 37 ramp around 2 a.m. on Nov. 17. He said the car did not yield as it came onto Post Road and he clocked it at 53 miles per hour on Post Road before it pulled over just before Airport Road. He said the operator had bloodshot eyes and appeared to be intoxicated and there was the smell of burnt marijuana coming from the car and its occupants. He said both men said they had smoked earlier but claimed there was no more pot in the car. He said he was getting the driver out of the car when he saw the passenger had his hands on his lap, covered by a sweater when, “He looked at me and said, ‘I’d be careful if I were you!’ In fear of my safety that Gagnon may have been reaching for a weapon … I quickly removed Wilcox from the vehicle and took control of his hands and immediately ordered Gagnon [the passenger] to place his hands where I could see them … put his hands in the air and said, ‘I’d be careful if I were you. I’m a criminal justice major.’” Sarkisian said he continued to tell the passenger to keep his hands on the dashboard and he continually tried to move them. When backup arrived, Sarkisian said he pulled the passenger out of the car and he began to get combative and demand, “What’s your [expletive] badge number! Watch, I’ll see you in court … you know I know my right! … You’re stepping on my brand new [expletive] sneakers. What the [expletive]. These are my new sneakers.” Sarkisian said he was satisfied that the passenger was unarmed and secured him in the back of his cruiser. He said the driver failed the field sobriety test and was arrested for suspicion of DUI. He said the driver also became combative and threw a sneaker at another officer and blew deficient samples on the breath test and refused to follow instructions and looked up at an African American officer and said “You [racial epithet]! Yeah, I know what I said. There’s nothing you can do about it, [expletive]. Yup.”

Sarkisian said he determined he was refusing the test and Christopher D. Wilcox, 21, of 347 Beach Ave. was charged with DUI and refusal, second offense, speeding, laned roadway violations and failure to yield. And later released to his mother.

Officer John Curley reported he was dispatched to a car that was stopped on West Shore Road after witnesses reported it was driving erratically and hit a curb before stopping at 50 West Shore Road. He said he asked the driver if he had been drinking or did any drugs and he said he had not, although he had just been released form Rhode Island Hospital and had taken Ativan and Dilaudid. He said the driver failed a field sobriety test and almost fell over. Curley said Louis J. DeSantis, 46, of 36 Hutchinson St. in Warwick was transported to Kent Hospital for detox where he refused to take a drug test. He was charged with DUI and refusal.
