DUI AND REFUSALS

Officer Nicholas DiNardo said he stopped a car on East Avenue around 5:55 p.m. on Nov. 30 after watching it cross in and out of its travel lane several times. He said the driver appeared to be drunk and continued puffing on a cigarette after being told five times to put it out. He said he smelled of alcohol and refused to look at DiNardo as he was speaking with him. He said the driver almost fell several times getting out of the car and admitted he had taken four alprazolam tablets and drank two beers. He said the man failed the field sobriety test after he said he had two bad legs, a bad back and heart surgery. He was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. Robert J. Willard, 57, of 69 Helen Ave., Warwick, was charged with DUI, refusal and laned roadway violations and then given a ride home to the custody of a sober adult.

Officer Matthew Moretti reported he was told by dispatch that a witness who said a possible drunk driver struck the curb on Route 2 around 12:15 a.m. on Nov. 28. The witness said he followed the car to Byron Boulevard, where Moretti met up with him. He said the car was in the driveway on Byron Boulevard. And the motor was running. He said he knocked on the window and saw the driver was talking on a cell phone and continued to until Moretti opened the door. He said the driver appeared to be drunk and smelled of alcohol. He said the passenger in the car became combative and was removed and handcuffed and placed in a cruiser while Moretti dealt with the driver, who failed a field sobriety test and blew a .192 on the portable breath tester. He said the driver was taken to headquarters, where he got combative and uncooperative and refused to take the breath test. Michael J. Foss, 44, of 122 Uncas St., Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult. In the meantime, his passenger was deemed too intoxicated to be left alone with her children and was taken to Kent Hospital, where the 43-year-old woman was put in restraints for involuntary detox. A female officer stayed at the Byron Boulevard address with the children until their grandmother arrived to take custody of them. The female officer also contacted DCYF to tell them what was going on at the house.

Officer Christian Vargas reported he was dispatched to the parking lot of Eddie’s 529 Club on Warwick Avenue around 7:35 p.m. on Nov. 26 for a report of an accident. He said he arrived to find a woman pacing back and forth who was identified as one of the drivers involved. The other driver told Vargas he had made arrangements with the other driver to have her pay for the broken window and he was satisfied with that. He said the woman driving the other car appeared to be under the influence but she said she was fine and was able to get home on her own. Vargas asked her to take a field sobriety test and she agreed. Vargas said she failed the field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where she refused a breath test. Amy C. Forrest, 44, of 40 Potters Ave., Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal and later taken to Kent Hospital for evaluation.

Officer Stephen Major reported he was dispatched to an accident on the Greenwood Bridge. One of the drivers involved had rear-ended another car and caused extensive damage. He said the driver of the second car appeared to be intoxicated and was unsteady on his feet and used the wall to steady himself. He said he asked the driver to take a field sobriety test and he failed the test. Richard H. Petrarca, 59, of 189 Bingham St., Warwick, was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. He was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Matthew Moretti reported an accident in the parking lot of 60 Jefferson Park around 8 p.m. He said he met a man who was outside his car who told him he called because he hit another car in the lot but it was the other driver’s fault for parking in an illegal spot. Moretti said the man appeared to be under the influence and admitted he had taken his medication and he did have a moderate smell of alcohol. He said he gave the man a field sobriety test and the man failed it. He said he also took a preliminary breath test and blew a .131 blood alcohol content. Michael Drury, 28, of 9 Carole Ct., Cranston, was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Sgt. Timothy Marshall reported clocking a Ford pickup truck doing 60 miles per hour on Warwick Avenue around 1 a.m. on Nov. 23. He said he pulled the car over near Hoxsie Four Corners, but the truck took off again when he approached it on foot and he had to jump back into his cruiser and chase it again. He said he followed it at around 30 miles per hour until it pulled into the Stone Brook Apartments on West Shore Road. Marshall said Kevin J. O’Connor, 48, of 140 Bluff Ave., Cranston, appeared to be drunk and failed a field sobriety test. He was taken to headquarters, where he refused a breath test. He was charged with DUI, speeding, laned roadway violations and refusal. He was later taken to Kent Hospital for medical evaluation.

Officer Nicholas Reay reported stopping a car for operating erratically on Post Road around 9:40 p.m. on Nov. 27 before it skidded into some “drifting” maneuvers before pulling into Tavern 12. He said the driver appeared to be intoxicated and was given a field sobriety test that he failed. He said Mitchell Roberts, 23, of 35 Red Oak Dr., Richmond, failed a field sobriety test and blew a .132 and a .153 blood alcohol content on the breath test. He was charged with moving violations, running a traffic signal and DUI. He was later released to a sober adult.

A Smithfield man was stopped and charged with DUI and refusal on Nov. 25. Officer Sokphannareth Chea said he clocked the man’s car at 53 miles per hour on Bald Hill Road and had to order him to pull over with his bullhorn before he stopped at Rhode Island Mall. Chea said Scott Smith, 42, of 27 MacArthur Dr., failed a field sobriety test and refused a breath test at headquarters.

Robert T. Barlow, 44, of 22 Highview Dr., West Warwick, was stopped for driving erratically around 59 miles per hour on Quaker Lane before Officer Jason Cooke stopped him. Cooke said Barlow smelled of alcohol and appeared to be drunk and failed a field sobriety test before being taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. He was charged with speeding, DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Karen Menard, 44, of 75 Village Ct., West Warwick, was charged with DUI and refusal after Officer Robert Gauvin stopped her on Bald Hill Road after she nearly ran into the curb near the Pep Boys store on Quaker Lane around 3:55 a.m. on Nov. 28. Gauvin said she refused a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where she refused to take a breath test and continued to be uncooperative until she was later released with a summons.

    Wow, lots of drunks on the road. Why don't we have road blocks and sobriety checks to catch more of them?
