Police advise Christmas shoppers to be extra careful this time of year when would-be thieves know that people often leave recently purchased gifts in their cars. They advise that you don’t leave gifts in the car but, if you must, at least put them out of sight in the trunk. Officer James Wenneman reported a Warwick man who returned to his pickup truck after a visit to the gym at Healthtrax at 2191 Post Rd. on Dec. 7 and found a rear window broken and a number of gifts missing. He listed a Coach pocket book at $278; a Coach wallet that cost $120; a Gucci perfume set from Macy’s at $55; a Swarovski earrings and bracelet set at $200; one Victoria’s Secret gift card for $150; one Visa gift card for $200; and the owner’s wallet with a Citizens Bank card and his driver’s license. Wenneman said he checked with management and learned there was no video surveillance of the parking lot, No suspects or witnesses.

BROKEN INTO

The owner of the Greenwood Nurseries told Officer Brian Murray she got a call from a friend the morning of Dec. 8 informing her that the back door of the greenhouse had been kicked in. The owner said she came to the business to inspect it because it had been closed since June. She said a snow blower that was stored in the back of the greenhouse was missing. She said the snow blower was worth around $400. She also told Murray the door had been kicked in about a month before but was in good shape the last time she saw it around a week before. She requested that officer do regular checks of the property. No suspects or witnesses.

SPECIAL WATCH

Officer Julio Benros spoke with a man at the YMCA about a watch that went missing from and unlocked locker while he was working out at the “Y” on Dec. 8. The man said it was a gold Hamilton wristwatch with a silver faceplate and “Masonic” numerals. He said a production stamp indicting that it was #95 out of 500 watches produced and engraved initials “RJS” on the back of the case. He said it was a square watch with historic value and worth around $385. No suspects or witnesses. The report was forwarded to detectives.

LOST LADDER

Officer Manuel Pacheco reported a ladder missing from a house on Warwick Neck Avenue on Dec. 7. The owner reported that he left his 24-foot Werner aluminum extension ladder beside the garage. He said the last time he remembered seeing the ladder was on Dec. 5 around 9 a.m. He said he noticed it was missing when he got home that day around 4:30 p.m. He said it was possible that the ladder had “Galipeau Construction” written on the side and the professional grade ladder cost $500. No suspects or witnesses.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer John Curley reported he was on patrol around 1 a.m. on Nov. 24 when he saw a car traveling in the middle of the left and right travel lanes for around a quarter of a miles before he pulled it over at the Grid Iron Bar and Grille. He said the woman driver appeared to be intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol. He said he asked her to get out of the car for a field sobriety test and she was “extremely unsteady on her feet” and refused to take a field sobriety test. However, he said, “based on my observations and training through the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy as well as my training and certification through the Advanced Roadside Impairment Driving Enforcement program [ARIDE], I determined that Woods was impaired and unfit to operate a motor vehicle safely.”

Maria Woods, 47, of 225 Mishnock Rd., West Greenwich, was arrested and taken to headquarters, where she refused to take a breath test. She was charged with refusal, DUI, laned roadway violations and not using a turn signal. She was later transported to Kent Hospital for detox.

Officer Jamey Petit reported stopping a car that he saw stop in the middle of an intersection and proceed while crossing over the center lines on Centerville Road around 1:30 a.m. on Nov. 23. He said it hit the curb on the left before he pulled it over at Post and Centerville. He said the driver smelled strongly of alcohol and he appeared to be drunk. He said he got the driver out of the car for a field sobriety test and he immediately walking into the middle of the street and had to be led to the sidewalk. He said the driver almost fell while he was giving him instructions and ignored instruction while he was taking the test. He said the driver failed the field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. Anthony M. Moore Jr., 24, of 630 Smithfield Ave., North Providence, was charged with DUI, refusal, laned roadway violations and illegal stopping in an intersection. He was later transported to Kent Hospital for detox.

MALICIOUS

A Vanstone Avenue man said his dog got loose and his SUV broken into on the morning of Dec. 8. He said Warwick Police told him about the break and the dog and when he checked the vehicle the only thing he noticed that was missing was a $500 Citizens Eco Drive watch from the glove compartment and the mirror from the passenger side door. There were no suspects or witnesses.
