OLD ADDRESSES

A Warwick man came into headquarters on Dec. 7 to tell police that someone had attempted to obtain a Bank of America credit card using his personal information the day before. He told them the would-be applicant had his name, date of birth and Social Security number and used an address he hasn’t been living at since 1977. He said the same person, apparently, tried to use the information for an American Express card as well. Officer Darren Parrillo said the report was for informational purposes and the victim was issued a copy of the report to submit to credit bureaus if the unidentified suspect ever succeeds in getting a card in his name.

STOLEN “WHEELS”

A Warwick contractor called police on Dec. 10 to report that a flatbed truck belonging to his company had been stolen from its Pavillion Avenue address. He told Officer Michael Walker the truck went missing sometime between Dec. 5 and Dec. 6. He said he checked around and found that none of his employees had taken the truck and he now believed it was stolen. He said it was a 1998 GMC with yellow paint that was peeling but the letters “L&L Concrete Forms” was still visible on the vehicle. He said the keys to the truck were usually kept in the ashtray in the cab so that any number of employees could use it when needed. The owner said he only had liability insurance on the truck and that he would press charges if the perpetrator were caught.

A North Street woman told police she parked her Toyota RAV4 outside her house around 3:30 a.m. on Dec. 9 and found that it was gone when she returned for it at 6 a.m. She said she locked the vehicle and had both sets of keys and no one had permission to use it. Officer Thomas Duncan said he checked the area and saw no signs of the vehicle or signs of forced entry or any objects that could have been used to open the vehicle. No suspects or witnesses.

HOT “WHEELS”

Officer Aaron Kay and other officers were dispatched to the area of the On The Border restaurant on Dec. 4 for a car fire. He said they arrived and found the 1995 Honda Prelude in the left travel lane completely engulfed in flames. He said he met with the driver and told him to move farther away from the car. He told Kay the car just burst into flames and he didn’t know what to do. Kay said he got his extinguisher out of his car, “which produced minimal results, as the fire continued to blaze” until the arrival of Warwick Fire. He said the driver stated he stopped to check on his brake light and when he pulled out again, the engine overheated and burst into flames. Warwick Fire said there was nothing suspicious about the fire and it appeared to be a malfunction in the wiring.

LARCENY

A North Kingstown woman reported she left her car in the lot at the Barnes & Noble store on Bald Hill Road on Dec. 10 and hid her pocketbook under the driver’s seat of her car as she worked her shift inside the store. She said she returned around 10 p.m. and found the back driver’s side window was smashed and her purse was missing from under the seat. She said the purse was worth around $100 and it contained her license, a checkbook, her birth certificate, her Social Security card, credit cards and $270 in cash. No suspects or witnesses.

Loss prevention at the Wal-Mart in the Rhode Island Mall told police they saw Lisa A. Gilchrist, 36, of 16 Grove St. conceal goods she gathered throughout the store before she left the store without paying for 38 pieces of merchandise worth $253.05 on Dec. 6. She was later released with a summons.

Meaghan E. Dube, 33, of 1619 Main St. in West Warwick was charged with stealing $274.98 worth of merchandise from the Sears store in the Rhode Island Mall on Dec. 7. She was held for the bail commissioner because she was on probation for receiving stolen goods and then later released on $3,000 surety bail.

Tiffany A. Weikman, 25, of 736 Washington St. in Coventry was charged with shoplifting at Kohl’s in the Rhode Island Mall on Dec. 4 after loss prevention told police she concealed $98.65 worth of jewelry and left without paying for it.

Two Providence men were charged with shoplifting and conspiracy to shoplift at Macy’s in the Warwick Mall on Nov. 29. Officer Nicholas Reay said the men conspired to steal $1,095 worth of Ralph Lauren Polo merchandise. Loss prevention told police she saw the men select the goods and then “stage” them on a shelf while one of them took the keys to the car and left the store. The other scooped up the goods and put them in an empty Old Navy shopping bag and made for the door. Diego Campos, 18, of 51 Alexander St. was charged with felony shoplifting because he was convicted of shoplifting on Nov. 4 of this year and held for court in the morning. Christopher A. Almonte, 20, of 26 Delmar St. was later released with a summons.

POSSESSION

Officer Manuel Pacheco reported he was on patrol around 4 p.m. on Dec. 7 when he saw a man he knew from prior contacts driving erratically on Beach Avenue. He said he ran a check on the man and learned he had a suspended license. He said he pulled him over near Church Avenue and observed a small baggie with small white rocks. He said the driver claimed they were bits of plaster from some work he had been doing but Pacheco suspected it was crack cocaine, especially after he saw the small glass pipe of the type used to smoke crack. He said he asked the man if he was smoking crack and the man got emotional and said it was crack cocaine. Michael J. Tierney, 29, of 44 New Britain Dr. in Warwick was charged with possession of crack cocaine and driving on a suspended license. He was later released on $5,000 surety bail.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Adam Arico reported he was dispatched to a hit and run accident at Wendy’s at 650 Bald Hill Rd. around 12:20 a.m. on Nov. 28. Dispatch said a green Saturn had left the scene of the accident and was heading toward the on ramp for Route 95 on East Street. Arico said he was with the victim at Wendy’s when Sgt. Timothy Marshall stopped the suspect on Post Road near City Hall. Arico took over the field sobriety test and said the driver staggered getting out of the car and smelled of alcohol and failed to pass a field sobriety test. David R. Shepheard, 25, of 86 Valley Ave. in Warwick was taken to headquarters where he refused to take a breath test. He was charged with DUI, refusal and leaving the scene of an accident and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Thomas Duncan reported he stopped a 2004 Jeep on East Avenue around 3:40 a.m. on Nov. 28 after watching it swerve from lane to lane as it headed over the Route 95 overpass. He said the driver smelled strongly of alcohol and appeared to be drunk. He said he had to assist her to the sidewalk where he gave her a field sobriety test that she failed. Stacey Blanchet, 43, of 40 Herbert St. in Coventry was charged with DUI after she registered a .162 and a .160 blood alcohol content on the breath test. She was charged with DUI and laned roadway violations.
