WARRANTS

Officer Aaron Steere reported stopping a car on Route 95 for an expired registration sticker on Dec. 12 and ended up arresting the driver for driving on a suspended license and two warrants for failure to appear in District Court. Officer John Larivee reported he stopped a car for running a red light on Greenwich Avenue around 3:40 p.m. on Dec. 1 and ended up arresting the driver on a number of offenses. He said the woman driving claimed she had no license and that her name was Jessica Sanchez but he could not find any records for her anywhere. He said he was taking her to headquarters after telling her he believed she was lying about her name after her repeatedly insisting her name was Jessica Sanchez. When she finally did admit she was actually Cristina Aponte, 22, of 159 Hudson St., Providence, and that she had a warrant out for her, he told her it was too late and she would be charged with obstructing an officer. He said he learned she had two outstanding warrants, a suspended license and was on probation for shoplifting in Cranston. She was transported to the ACI to await arraignment.

Loss prevention told police he snatched four designer fragrances worth $188.88 from the counter and concealed them in a bag before leaving the store without paying for them. He was charged with felony shoplifting for a prior shoplifting conviction and had an active arrest warrant out of Cranston for obstruction. He was held for the next session.

Jonathan M. Reynolds, 34, of 529 Warwick Ave., Warwick, was charged with receiving stolen goods and being a habitual offender on Dec. 11 after police arrested him at home on a warrant for shoplifting at Shaw’s Market on Warwick Avenue. According to Officer Christian Vargas, Reynolds was accused of stealing 19 items of food, household goods and toys from Shaw’s. Vargas said Reynolds gave them a statement saying, “My kids were hungry…It’s been years since I shoplifted…Please have pity on me.” Court records show that Reynolds was on probation for larceny and habitual shoplifting since Jan. of 2012.

Joan E. Lewis, 66, of 40 Lenox St., North Kingstown, was charged with stealing a black coat and a pair of red slippers worth $232 from the JC Penney store in Warwick Mall. Officer Nicholas Reay said she claimed she didn’t realize she took the jacket and thought it was her own, yet admitted she removed the tags from the items. She was later released with a summons.

Larue Mendes, 19, of 335 Hartford Ave., Providence, was charged with stealing two items worth $193 from the Macy’s store in Warwick Mall on Dec. 12. She was later released with a summons.

Margaret Harrington, 56, of 61 Washington St., Central Falls, was charged with felony shoplifting on Dec. 10 after loss prevention at the JC Penney store told police she hid three pairs of sneakers worth $170 in a baby stroller and walked out without paying for them. She was arrested outside and charged with felony shoplifting and held for arraignment as a probation violator and a habitual offender. Her grandson was later turned over to his mother.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Jason Cooke reported meeting with an off-duty Milford, Mass. police officer at an accident on Bald Hill Road around 5:25 p.m. on Dec. 5. Cooke said the officer witnessed the accident and was the first to notice that the driver of one of the vehicles appeared to be under the influence and smelled of alcohol. Cooke said he came to the same conclusion and gave a field sobriety test to the driver. He said the driver failed the field sobriety test even though she claimed to have two margaritas an hour before. Cooke said he took Kelley M. Bertherman, 38, of 57 Austin Ave., Greenville, to headquarters, where she registered a .191 and a .197 blood alcohol content on the breath test. She was charged with DUI and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Thomas Duncan stopped a Jeep he said was “driving all over the roadway” on East Avenue around 3:40 a.m. on Nov. 28 with only one working taillight. He said the driver appeared to be under the influence and smelled strongly of alcohol even though she “had two vodkas” earlier. He said he asked her where she was going and she said she was going to New Hampshire to see her sister. He said she failed a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where she registered a .160 and a .162 blood alcohol content on the breath test. Stacey Blanchet, 43, of 40 Herbert St., Coventry, was charged with DUI and later released with a summons.

Officer Robert Gauvin reported he was on patrol around 2:10 a.m. on Dec. 4 when he clocked a black sedan at 68 miles per hour on Quaker Lane. He said he pulled the car over and noticed its jerky braking pattern as it pulled over. He said the driver appeared to be drunk and had an “overpowering odor of alcohol emanating from his breath.” He said the driver failed a field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where he registered a .206 and a .198 blood alcohol content on the breath test. Douglas T. Deleone, 22, of 68 Massasoit Ave., Portsmouth, was charged with DUI and speeding later released to a sober adult.

Officer John Curley reported stopping a driver for not wearing a seat belt and doing 45 miles per hour on Warwick Avenue around 8:36 p.m. on Dec. 6. He said the roads were wet at the time and the car almost hit the curb as it swerved from lane to lane. He said he asked the driver to take a field sobriety test, but he claimed he had prior injuries that prevented him from walking straight. He said he did not take the walk and turn but did try the one leg stand and he failed that. Curley said, due to his training and experience, he determined that the driver was unfit to operate a car. He said he refused to take a preliminary test on the portable breath meter and refused a breath test at headquarters. He was charged with DUI, refusal, speeding, laned roadway violations and a failure to appear in Superior Court warrant as a probation violator. Donald Camerlin, 34, of 1024 West Shore Rd., was held for the bail commissioner.
