NOT IN WRITING

Officer Bretton Kelly reported that he was called into headquarters on Jan. 6 to speak with a Cumberland woman who said she was turning herself in because of an incident at Nordstrom Rack in Warwick Mall on Jan. 1. Kelly said he got a copy of the report and discovered that the woman was the suspect in a shoplifting and felony assault incident at the store.

He said he advised her of her rights and heard her side of the story. He said she told him that she stopped at Nordstrom’s Rack that day after she took the Polar Plunge in Narragansett to change her clothes because there was no place there to change. She said she thought about shopping for additional clothing and was in the shoe department and claimed that this woman kept bumping into her on purpose. She said she brought it to the woman’s attention and there were no further incidents. She said she was browsing when she came upon the watches and was looking at an Anne Klein watch when the same woman came out of nowhere and told her she was store security and advised her to come with her. She said she was frightened of the woman’s demeanor and gave her the watch and walked out of the store. She said the security woman followed her outside and kicked her in the crotch because she didn’t do anything wrong and would not got back inside the store and continued to her car. She said the security woman then stood in front of the car to keep her from leaving and then on the side of the car when they were leaving. She said the security women eventually got out of the way and said she was going to call the police. She said her boyfriend later told her that police were looking for her.

Kelly said he asked the woman if she would provide a written statement and she said she would not. He asked her if she stole from the store and assaulted the security guard and she denied both. The report said that police had a DVD of the incident but did not say if Kelly told the suspect, Frances Lavallee, 50, of 271 England St., they had it. Lavallee was charged with felony assault and shoplifting. Court records show that Lavallee pleaded no contest to shoplifting in Warwick on Nov. 21, 2011.

WARRANTED

Officer Aaron Kay reported he was on patrol when he heard a broadcast about a shoplifting suspect fleeing from the Walmart at Rhode Island Mall around 9:50 p.m. on Jan. 1. He said he was driving into the mall when he saw the suspect through the parking lot toward Sears, where he stopped him and cuffed him. He said the loss prevention agent from the store told him this was the same man he saw select several items in the store and present them at the service desk as returned in an attempt to get money. The agent said the man is known as a shoplifter, and he saw him try to use a receipt from Dec. 28 after selecting merchandise that matched the receipt to collect $17.70. Jeffrey M. Tarbox, 57, of 50 Howard Ave., Cranston, was charged with shoplifting and warned to stay out of the store or be charged with trespassing. He was held on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on another charge.

DUCK DYNASTY FAN

A West Greenwich man was arrested and charged with shoplifting at the Walmart store at Rhode Island Mall on Dec. 31. Officer Gary Driscoll reported a number of officers were dispatched to the store around 1:55 p.m. for a shoplifting in progress at the store and heard that the suspect, an older male, and fled the store and was heading for the On The Border restaurant. He said a loss prevention agent accompanied police into the restaurant and identified the man, who was led out of the restaurant and put in handcuffs and the back of a police car and then taken to headquarters. Driscoll said he noticed the suspect was very fidgety and was constantly moving, as if he was under the influence of some substance. He said he would suddenly get very angry and then calm down shortly after that. He said a search of the suspect turned up an empty bag labeled “Nuke” (labeled as a tobacco resin remover similar in effect to the recently outlawed “bath salts”) that the suspect either ingested or smoked to get high. He said the suspect took off his shirt and complained that he was hot and having “random hallucinations and aggressive outbursts.” The loss prevention agent said the suspect was concealing items before he left the store through the garden shop without paying for the goods. Bruce R. Authelet, 42, of 183 Victory Highway, West Greenwich, was charged with shoplifting a Duck Dynasty hoodie and a Duck Dynasty camouflage hat worth a total of $29.92. He was later released to Kent Hospital for evaluation.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Nicholas Reay reported he was on a special DUI enforcement detail around 12 a.m. on Dec. 29 when he saw a car doing 10 miles below the limit and moving erratically on Route 95 near Route 10. He said it almost hit another car before he pulled it over. He said the driver appeared to be under the influence and smelled strongly of alcohol. He said he asked her to take a field sobriety test and she said, “Ah, don’t worry, I’ve done this plenty of times. You don’t have to explain it to me.” He said she failed the field sobriety test and was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. He said she spontaneously uttered, “I’m not even drunk. I only had three shots,” and then told him that she just recently got accepted to law school and her lawyer would be a congressman and that Reay “didn’t know what I had coming my way.” He said Crystal L. Rego, 41, of 55 Canochet Ave., Warwick, refused to take a breath test and was charged with DUI refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Eric Lima reported he was dispatched to an address on Merry Mount Drive around 9 p.m. on Jan. 4 where a witness reported a drunk driver spinning her tires, attempting to drive away. He said he found the car on the snow-covered lawn and requested that she shut the car off a number of times before she finally did. He said he asked her to get out and take a field sobriety test and she refused help and fell on the lawn. He said he picked her up and she said she would take the test. She did and she failed it. She was taken to headquarters, where she refused to take a breath test. Lisa I. Rodrigues, 51, of 114 Merry Mount Dr., was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Daniel DiMaio reported he was dispatched to the scene of a damaged vehicle on Cottage Street around 1:15 a.m. on Dec. 29. He said he met with a woman who told him she got a call from a friend who told her that her husband had vandalized her car but, after her friend’s story changed several times, she called the police and her friend’s father. DiMaio said the concern was whether there was a domestic assault or vandalism involved. DiMaio said he encountered the same sort of inconsistency, as well as noticing that the damage done to the car was at odds with the story she was telling everybody and became even stranger when she was pressed for details. He said she finally admitted she had been in an accident on Metro Center Boulevard, and DiMaio read her rights to her. He said there had been an accident between a bike rider and a car on Metro and it was a hit and run. DiMaio said she was apparently drunk and insisted she hit a pole but then said it might have been an animal. He said she eventually admitted that she hit a man on a bicycle. She was charged with hitting Michael P. Hague, 46, of 2220 Warwick Ave., who was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and listed in serious condition, although he was conscious and speaking with police. Kristylee A. Perrino, 29, of 55 Grimshaw Place, Warwick, was charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.
