SHOPLIFTING

Officer Stephen Major reported arresting a woman at the Nordstrom Rack store in Warwick Mall on Feb. 21 after loss prevention agents told him they caught her leaving the store with two bottles of fragrance worth $109.94 concealed in her jacket. Major said he learned that the woman had a number of prior convictions for shoplifting and two outstanding warrants, one of which was for failure to appear for a sentencing for driving without a license and another for failure to appear in Superior Court for a probation violation hearing. Alison R. Hawkins, 32, of 92 Rhode Island St., Cranston, was charged with felony shoplifting and then remanded to the ACI when she could not pay the $10,000 surety bail.

Police were dispatched to Hobby Lobby at 945 Bald Hill Rd. around 7:40 p.m. for a shoplifting in progress on Feb. 20. Loss prevention told police they were following two subjects on video who were filling backpacks with merchandise. Police were waiting for them when they came out of the store and Megan Mitchell, 23, of 27 Smith St., Taunton, and Shain Johnson, 23, of the same address, were charged with stealing 43 pieces of jewelry worth $177.91 and held for the bail commissioner.

An East Providence man was charged with stealing $858.11 worth of clothing from the Nordstrom Rack store in Warwick Mall. Marc Ferrucci, 23, of 125 Grassy Plain Rd., was charged with shoplifting and later released with a summons.

DUI OR REFUSAL

Officer Christian Vargas reported stopping a car for going excessively slow on Post Road around 10:50 p.m. on Feb. 14 before it turned into the Battery Shop parking lot without using a directional. He said the driver smelled of alcohol and appeared to be under the influence. He said the driver claimed he only had two beers, but he failed a field sobriety test and was finally called a refusal after he dithered about taking the test. Vargas explained to him that delaying taking the test will be deemed refusal. Eric Johnsen, 58, of 1 Brian Dr., Bristol, was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.

Officer John Curley reported stopping a car for operating erratically on Feb. 22 on Greenwich Avenue. He said the driver smelled of alcohol and admitted to “having a few” earlier. He said the man was extremely unsteady on his feet and failed a field sobriety test. He said he also refused to take a breath test on the portable tester and at headquarters. William Chaput, 49, of 32 Keaton St., Pawtucket, was charged with DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.
