CONFINEMENT

Officer Christian Vargas reported that he stopped a car for taking an illegal turn onto Route 37 around 5:25 p.m. on Feb. 24. He said he ran a check on the driver and found his license was suspended and he had a number of “failure to appear” incidents on his record and that he was currently serving a home confinement sentence. Vargas said he called the home confinement people to let them know the man was not going to make curfew. He said they requested that he keep them up to date on the man’s status and when he would be released. He said a probation officer called after that and requested that the man be held without bail as a probation violator and that someone from Probation would respond to headquarters to transport Migueleyn Pujols, 22, of 54 Moorefield St., Providence, to the ACI.

WARRANT

Officer Daniel DiMaio reported clocking a car doing 60 miles per hour on Airport Road around 1:15 a.m. on March 1. The driver was ticketed for speeding and an expired inspection sticker but his passenger, James Christopher Perreault, 28, of 16 Benedict St., Providence, was wanted for failure to appear for a suspended license charge. He was processed and then transported to the ACI.

Officer Jacob Elderkin reported he was on patrol around 8:45 p.m. when he saw a car on Bald Hill Road with blue aftermarket lighting around the rear license plate, making it difficult to see the number, and a left brake light out. He said the driver and owner of the car, Malcolm Rosa, 20, of 13 Watson St., Central Falls, had an active warrant out and an expired license. He was arrested and taken to headquarters, where he was cited for equipment failures and driving without a license and then held for the bail commissioner.

BANISHED

Officer Jacob Elderkin arrested a man at Warwick Mall on Feb. 26 after a security guard at the mall told him the man had been trespassed from the mall on Feb. 12 and told he would be arrested if he returned. Gesy Burgos, 44, of 525 Talbot Ave., Dorchester, Mass., was later released with a summons for trespassing.

shoplifting

Officer David Thompson reported he was dispatched to the Walmart at Rhode Island Mall on Feb. 27 for a shoplifting in progress. He said he arrived to find that two suspects had already been apprehended by loss prevention. They told police they had been shadowing the two men in the store and saw them select a variety of items, including headphones, phone cases and screen projectors, and conceal the goods on their persons before leaving the store without paying for them. Thompson said he learned that one of the suspects, Charles F. Palardy, 35, had four active warrants out for him: one for larceny out of the Rhode Island State Police and three for failure to appear in District Court. He was held for the bail commissioner for the warrants and as a possible probation violator. His companion, Joseph Aquilante, 30, of 7 Bellevue Ave., North Providence, was later released with a summons but without three pairs of “designer” sunglasses that were not from Walmart for which he had no receipts. He was told he could have them back when he brings the receipts to headquarters.

Officer Kevin McGuire was dispatched to the Walmart at Rhode Island Mall for a shoplifting in progress but learned that another officer already captured the suspect. Loss prevention told police they watched the suspect select a computer game and remove it from its package and conceal it in his jacket. They said they stopped the suspect outside and got the game back but the suspect fled and was caught by another officer. Jonathan M. Powell, 24, of 13 Union Dr., North Kingstown, was charged with shoplifting and later released with a summons.

DUI OR REFUSAL

Officer John Curley reported he was on Greenwich Avenue around 12:23 a.m. when he clocked a car doing 55 miles per hour going south in the middle of the right and left lanes with no lights on. He said he pulled it over at 555 Greenwich Avenue and asked the driver, who appeared to be under the influence, if he had been drinking and he admitted he “had a few.” He said he had the driver do a field sobriety test and, “Due to my training and experience…I concluded that Chaput was impaired and unfit to operate a motor vehicle.” Curley said William Chaput, 49, of 32 Heaton St., Pawtucket, was seated next to the Intoxilyzer 5000 and was read his rights. Curley said Chaput refused to take the breath test. He was charged with refusal, DUI, speeding, laned roadway violations and driving ay night without lights. He was later released to a sober adult.

Officer Nicholas Reay reported stopping a pickup after seeing it careen around Apponaug around 11:35 p.m. on Feb. 20. He said he could smell alcohol on the driver’s breath and asked him if he had been drinking and he replied he had not. Reay asked why he smelled alcohol on his breath, and “He said that I was making it up.” He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test that he could not complete because Reay was concerned about him falling down. He said Brendan P. McGill, 34, of 22 Standard Ave., West Warwick, was charged with DUI, refusal and laned roadway violations. Reay said McGill refused to call anyone to come and take him home, so he was taken to Kent Hospital for detox.

Officer Keri-Ann Leighton reported she pulled a car over for operating erratically on Post Road around 1 a.m. on Feb. 25. She said the driver gave a left hand signal but did not move left and then gave a signal to take a right, the wrong way on a one-way street. She said she pulled him over in the Comfort Inn parking lot. She said the driver smelled of alcohol and told her he was coming from Bowen’s Wharf in Newport. He denied he had been drinking and said he was trying to get to his in-laws’ house on Tidewater Drive. She said she thought he didn’t know where he was going and he explained that he lived in New Mexico and was going back there in the morning with his father, who was staying at the Hilton Hotel, and that he just bought the vehicle at an auction in New Hampshire, and it was previously owned by a woman in Monmouth, Maine. Leighton asked him to take a field sobriety test and he did, and he failed it. Brandon Wayne Thompson, 39, of 5800 Eubank Blvd., Albuquerque, N.M., was taken to headquarters, where he refused to take a breath test. He was charged with DUI, refusal and laned roadway violations and held for District Court later that day.

Officer Damian Andrews reported he was dispatched to the intersection of Post and Airport Roads around 11:40 p.m. on Feb. 23 for a man slumped over a steering wheel. He said she shook the man and yelled and tried to get him to wake up. When he didn’t wake up they called for Rescue to have him evaluated. He said he eventually got a mumbled response and the information that he had taken two tranquilizers. Andrews said it was clear he was under the influence of some drug and it seemed more potent that two tranquilizers. He said the driver failed a field sobriety test and they brought him to Kent Hospital, where he refused a chemical test. Andrews said they learned that David A. Dileonardo had an outstanding warrant for driving on a suspended license. He was charged with DUI, refusal and stopping illegally and later transported to the ACI for the warrant.
