SHOPLIFTING

Officer Jason Cooke was dispatched to Wal-Mart at 650 Bald Hill Road at approximately 3:30 p.m. on March 29 for the report of shoplifting. Dispatch advised that loss prevention personnel at Wal-Mart originally had one male and one female in custody, however the male left the area in an unknown direction. Upon arrival, Cooke said he met with loss prevention personnel, who said he observed two subjects, a man and a woman, in the Electronics Department. He said the man selected multiple cell phone cases, opened the packages and concealed the merchandise inside his cargo pants pockets. He then met up with the woman, who also concealed some of the opened merchandise inside her purse. Once all the merchandise was concealed, loss prevention said the subjects passed all final points of sale, made no attempt to pay for the concealed merchandise and exited the store through the main exit. Once outside, loss prevention stopped the subjects and asked them to come back inside, to which they complied. Loss prevention said the subjects then provided all their contact information and R.I. state driver’s licenses. Once the man gave his contact information to loss prevention, he asked if they would be pressing charges, and when loss prevention said they would be pressing charges, the man grabbed his license and exited the store, running in an unknown direction. The loss prevention associate said he made no attempt to stop the man at that time. Cooke said the woman remained in the loss prevention office and he met with her and attempted to contact the man several times via her cell phone but was met with negative results. Alexandra Messina, 19, of 16 Diane Dr., Warwick was then arrested and transported to police headquarters, where she was processed and later released with a summons for Third District Court. She was charged with one count of misdemeanor shoplifting. The total amount of merchandise that Messina concealed was valued at $39.84, which contained miscellaneous clothing items.

Officer Joseph DeDonato II and Officer Brian Murray responded to the Wal-Mart at 840 Post Rd. at approximately 12:49 p.m. on March 27 in reference to an adult male and adult female in custody for shoplifting. Upon arrival, DeDonato said he met with a loss prevention officer for Wal-Mart, who said he observed a man and a woman select various DVDs and Blu-Ray discs from the Electronics Department and place them into a carriage. The subjects then proceeded to the Domestics Department, where the man removed the plastic wrap from the movies and concealed the items in the woman’s purse. They then made their way to the Makeup aisle, where they selected various makeup items and concealed them in the woman’s purse. Loss prevention then observed the pair proceed to the front checkout, paying for some items but not paying for the concealed items in the woman’s purse before exiting the store, passing several active registers but making no attempt to pay for the concealed items. Once outside the store, loss prevention stopped the subjects and escorted them back into the store to the loss prevention office. Once there, the concealed merchandise was turned back over to Wal-Mart. All of the unpaid merchandise was recovered, consisting of 17 items representing a total value of $150.70. DeDonato said Murray took custody of Jessica Butler, 31, while he took custody of Sean Butler, 26, of 26 Briar Cliffe, Cranston, and both were transported to police headquarters, where they were processed and an inventory was conducted of their belongings. Murray said Sean Butler and Jessica Butler were each charged with one count of misdemeanor shoplifting. He said both also had warrants and they were subsequently transported to the courthouse. DeDonato said Sean had an outstanding warrant for Failure to Appear on a Driving with a Suspended License charge.

Prior to his arrival, he said Dispatch advised him that an adult female was currently in custody by the loss prevention officer. Upon arrival, Tavares said he met with the loss prevention officer, who said he observed a woman enter the store and use the Scan It system within the store. He said while observing her, she failed to scan the majority of items in her shopping cart. He said she concealed the products in several shopping bags, then walked to the front of the store, where she cashed out and paid only for $60.63 worth of merchandise, before exiting the store and passing all final points of purchase but failing to pay for the concealed merchandise. The woman was then approached by loss prevention outside of the store, who escorted her back into the store to the loss prevention office. Loss prevention said all of the shoplifted merchandise was recovered, which totaled $239.80. Tavares said the store wished to press charges, and Christina Valliere, 29, of 397 Nausauket Rd., Warwick was placed into handcuffs and transported to police headquarters, where she was fingerprinted and photographed.
