ASSAULT CHARGE

Officer Adam Arico reported that he was one of several officers dispatched to the Tumble Town Laundry in Meadowbrook around 4:30 p.m. on June 8. The call was about a fight in the parking lot and one of the combatants was reported to have left the scene in a dark conversion van last seen on Sandy Lane. He said he was en route to Tumble Town when he heard that Officer Geoffrey Waldman stopped the van on Sandy Lane. Arico said he spoke with the victim who told him he was pulling into the parking lot on his way to Haxton’s Liquors when the van backed out of a parking space right into his lane of travel. He said he beeped his horn and yelled something at the driver and then parked in front of Haxton’s and an older man approached him and began yelling at him. He said they exchanged words and he went inside the liquor store. He said he was returning to his car in the parking lot when another man confronted him and they exchanged more words before the younger man attacked him and they fought. He said he was thrown to the ground and hit several times before the younger man walked off toward the CVS store. The manager of the liquor store told police he had the incident on video and allowed police to review the footage. He said they also had two independent witnesses who corroborated what the victim said. Police later arrested Christopher Ryan Ramella, 28, of 50 Sparrow Lane in Warwick, and charged him with simple assault and battery.

HIT AND RUN

Officer James Wenneman reported he was dispatched to the Walmart on Post Road around 5:40 p.m. on June 8 for a report of a hit and run accident in front of that location. He said he spoke with the other car involved. They told him they were rear ended by the other car before the other car fled the scene. They gave police the plate number for the other car and it was traced to an address in Cranston. Both occupants of the car that was hit complained of neck pain and were transported for medical treatment. Wenneman said they called Cranston Police and they were going to the address associated with the plate number to speak with the owner of the suspected vehicle. Wenneman said Cranston called back and said they had the suspect at 176 Arnold Ave. in that city. He said they met with Cranston police and the suspect and the suspect denied she was in an accident and said she merely bumped the other car. Wenneman said he explained to her that she had to stop anyway. He also mentioned that she smelled of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated and admitted she had two glasses of wine in Oakland Beach, but, apparently, no police officer had seen her operating her car. Barbara Oliveri, 52, of 176 Arnold Ave. was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failing to maintain control of her vehicle and later released to a sober adult.

SHOPLIFTING

Loss prevention at the Walmart on Post Road told police they caught a Warwick woman attempting to leave the store without paying for $30.44 worth of cosmetics concealed in her purse on June 8. Alicia Rae Werthessen, 40, of 20 Pratt Cir. was later released on $3,000 surety bail.

Loss prevention at the TJ Maxx store on Bald Hill Road told police a Warwick woman later identified as Christine E. Aptt, 42, of 3408 West Shore Rd. select shirts, belts and cosmetics and conceal them in her handbag before leaving the store without paying for the concealed goods. Officer Nicholas Reay said she was charged with felony shoplifting on June 8 when they learned of prior convictions for shoplifting and that she was a probation violator. She was held for the next session of District Court.

ACCIDENTS

Lt. Michael Gilbert reported that there were several accidents over the weekend but, fortunately, no one suffered life-threatening injuries.

The first was a five-car accident on Post Road near the East Greenwich line around 11 a.m. Sunday morning. Gilbert said the accident occurred when one of the cars suddenly stopped to take a left onto Crestwood Road, causing the car behind it to veer to avoid an accident, causing another car to veer into an opposite lane and hit another car and cause that car to hit another until five cars with varying degrees of damage were blocking the traffic on Post Road. Two occupants of the cars was taken to Kent Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and two cars had to be towed, causing traffic to be stalled and re-routed while the cars were cleared from the road. Gilbert described it as a typical accident with no evidence of drugs or alcohol being involved and minor traffic violations being cited.

The other accident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Spring Green Road. Gilbert said a motorcycle left the road and hit a house. He said the accident appeared to be a combination of the operator being unfamiliar with the area and a mechanical malfunction. He said the driver was treated at the scene and later taken to Rhode Island Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. No drugs or alcohol were suspected to be involved.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer Matthew Moretti reported stopping a Jeep Patriot for doing 61 miles per hour on Greenwich Avenue around 10:20 p.m. on June 1. Arico said he clocked the car with radar and pulled the car over at the intersection of Routes 5 and 113. He said the driver had slurred speech and alcohol on her breath as he questioned her. He said she admitted having one drink at Fat Belly’s and agreed to a field sobriety test. He said she failed the test and was taken to headquarters where she refused to take a breath test. Sonya G. Trillo, 20, of 25 Sharon St. in Cranston was charged with DUI and refusal. Moretti said he found a false ID in Trillo’s name from New Jersey; a license issued to a Massachusetts woman; another ID for another woman from Pennsylvania; an Indiana license for another 24-year-old woman; two more Massachusetts licenses in two other women’s names and her own provisional license, which had expired. All of the cards were seized to be turned over to the DMV. Trillo was later released to a sober adult.
