INDICTED

The Kent County Grand Jury brought an indictment charging Michael Christopher Palermo, 20, of 171 Adams St., and Robert J. Bailey, 21 of 212 Jefferson St., both in Warwick, with burglary, first degree robbery, breaking and entering a premises occupied by a person over 60 years of age, conspiracy to commit burglary and conspiracy to commit first degree robbery. It is charged that Palermo and Bailey broke into a residence in Warwick on Feb. 1 and robbed an individual, with the robbery being in the first degree. Warwick detectives conducted the investigation. Palermo and Bailey are being held without bail to be arraigned in Kent County Superior Court on July 25.

According to police reports from the incident, Bailey and Palermo were identified by a guest at the house at the time the robbery occurred, who told police the suspects held him down with a pistol to his head. Detectives questioned a number of witnesses and suspects and came away with evidence that led to Bailey and Palermo. The guest also said that the friend he was visiting was believed to be dealing marijuana, which the suspects looked for but apparently did not find before they found an Xbox and took that. After sorting through a thicket of conflicting stories and unsubstantiated alibis, Palermo and Bailey were charged.

SHOPLIFTING

Officer Eric Lima reported arresting a Scituate woman at the JC Penney store in the Warwick Mall on June 25 and charging her with stealing $557.90 worth of cosmetics. The 22 items that Courtney Gilbert, 20, of 800 Central Pike is accused of taking include foundation, blush and powder, brushes and lipstick that averaged $25 per item. Loss prevention said she collected the goods in a shopping basket and then took them into a fitting room. Loss prevention said she brought the basket into a fitting room and emerged with the basket empty. They said she put the pair of jeans she brought into the fitting room back on the rack and left the empty basket on the floor. They said she then left the store without paying for the concealed goods. Loss prevention said they recovered the items from a bag inside an American Eagle shopping bag. Loss prevention gave Lima a copy of the footage showing Gilbert’s activity in the store. She was later released from headquarters with a summons for District Court.

Loss prevention at JC Penney told police that Elizabeth Casado, 23, of 35 Meadowbrook Way in South Kingstown used her 11-year-old niece to help her select and conceal merchandise from the store in the girl’s bag. They said the girl put the items in her bag as her aunt removed the security tags. Casado, her niece and two other juvenile females were detained by loss prevention after they walked out of the store without paying for the concealed goods. Loss prevention told Officer Stephen Major they recovered 31 items worth a total of $730.14. Major said that a man, identified as the father of one of the juveniles and the uncle of the other two, took custody of the children at the store. Casado was taken to headquarters where she was charged with one count of shoplifting and later released with a summons for District Court.
