SUDDEN DEATH

Police reported that they were dispatched to the Les Chateau Apartments at 1403 Warwick Ave. around 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 11 after a maintenance worker there reported finding the body of a tenant kneeling over a chair in his apartment. Officer Adam Arico reported that a neighbor told them he hadn’t seen the man in weeks and that the man did not usually leave his apartment very often. The maintenance man showed police into the apartment, and Arico said it appeared that the man had been dead at least several days and the apartment was quite warm. Another neighbor volunteered that he also had not seen the man in weeks but said he did notice and odor two or three days before. Another more elderly neighbor said she saw him as recently as two days before but the state of the body belied that observation, but she did tell police that the man did have a drinking problem and she described him as a “severe alcoholic.” The Medical Examiner’s office sent an investigator and Warwick detectives secured the apartment after the medical examiner took custody of the body of Stephen Laflamme, 55, as police and the apartment manager contacted next of kin. The report was forwarded to detectives for further inquiry.

ASSAULT

Officer Robert Gauvin reported he was dispatched to the Food Court in Warwick Mall around 5:15 p.m. on Aug. 4 for a fight between an individual and mall security. He said he arrived to find the man in the security office. He said the guard who was involved in the fight told Gauvin his assailant came to the service desk and claimed that he was there to get inside and clean the Pandora Jewelry store. He said he asked the man for his credentials but the man would not provide any. He said he repeated this request for identification but the man refused to supply them and became belligerent and vulgar and was escorted to the exit, at which point the man attacked him. He said a security supervisor told him he arrived on the scene while the suspect was getting the better of the guard until a passerby grabbed the suspect and held him as the supervisor put the handcuffs on him. He said they had video of the whole confrontation. He said Michael F. Merritt, 43, of 69 Grove St., Worcester, Mass., was charged with simple assault and battery and later released with a summons.

LAWN DAMAGE

Officer Michael Walker reported that he spoke with a couple that lives on Love Lane who said they woke up around 4 a.m. on Aug. 10 and found that someone had been up on their lawn with an automobile and done some damage to the lawn. Walker said there was obvious damage to the grass and there were parts of the lawn debris in the driveway. The owners speculated that the person responsible was trying to knock over the Langevin for Congress sign on the lawn, which they struck, or went off the road and dug up the lawn spinning out in a hurry. They told Walker they would press charges if whoever was responsible for the damage was caught.

SHOPLIFTING

Loss prevention at the Kohl’s store in Rhode Island Mall told police they arrested a woman for stealing a shirt from the store on Aug. 11 that she stashed in the Hallmark area of the store on Aug. 4. The agent explained that the woman was an outside contractor for Kohl’s who was seen on closed circuit television retrieving the shirt and putting it in her bag before she finished her work and walked out of the store. Roseann Maiorisi, 58, of 200 Wallace St., Providence, was taken to headquarters, where she was charged with shoplifting and later released with a summons.

Melinda Goncalves, 34, of 22 Hobson Ave., North Providence, was charged with stealing a wallet worth $19.99 on Aug. 9. Loss prevention told police she was caught on video taking a wallet to the back of the store and putting it in her purse before paying for some other items and leaving the store without attempting to pay for the wallet. The loss prevention agent said he was leading Goncalves back to the security office when Goncalves pulled the wallet out of her purse and tossed it under a display. Unfortunately, according to the loss prevention agent, while doing that she dropped the vase she had paid for and it smashed on the floor. The report did not say what the vase cost.

DUI

Officer Jacob Elderkin reported a hit and run accident at Warwick Neck Avenue and West Shore Road around 6:55 p.m. on Aug. 3. Dispatch said the car left the scene, crossed over West Shore and was headed toward Edythe Street. A short time later, another officer reported he stopped the car at 47 Edythe and was out with the driver.
