EGGED ON

Officer James Wenneman reported going to Pettaconsett Avenue on Sept. 14 for a report of vandalism. A couple there told him they came home around 8 p.m. from their relative’s house. She told Wenneman they had just drawn the blinds in the living room when they heard some banging coming from the front of the house and her husband went to investigate. She said they found eggs outside their front door and that the house had been hit with eggs. He told Wenneman their vehicles, a pickup truck and a Cadillac SUV, had been egged and then covered all over with syrup, food coloring and bread crumbs. Wenneman said he then spoke with a second resident at the property, the landlord, who had a separate house that also had been egged, as well as the mailbox and the driveway. All of the parties said they had no particular arguments or altercations to account for the episode. No suspects or witnesses.

LENDING A NOSE

Officer Peter Wells and K-9 “Fox” were summoned to a traffic stop to assist a Rhode Island State Trooper. The trooper said he suspected there might be drugs in the car he stopped, but he had no probable cause to search the interior. He asked to have Fox do a “free air sniff” around the car to determine if there were any drugs inside. He said Fox concentrated on the seam of the rear door and started scratching at the door handle to indicate the scent of drugs. That was probable cause, and Fox went inside the car and inadvertently hit the catch on the center console compartment and revealed a large amount of cash, about $6,000 in bills. He also found a backpack containing what looked like marijuana and weighed 2.2 grams. It tested positive, and the trooper arrested the driver for possession of narcotics. Fox and Wells went back on patrol.

SHOPLIFTING

Ashley Stegdras Facey, 18, of 12 Avery St., Pawcatuck, Conn. and a female juvenile were charged with stealing $174 and $187.99 worth of merchandise, respectively, at the JC Penney store in Warwick Mall on Sept. 15. Facey was released with a summons and the juvenile was held pending the appearance of her guardian.

Steven Galloway, 20, of 24 Johnson Ave., Warwick, was charged with stealing a “Hey Arnold” and a D.A.R.E. T-shirt from the JC Penney store on Sept. 16. The shirts were worth $24. He was released with a summons.

Melinda S. Rodrigo, 36, of 128 Oak St., Providence, was charged with stealing a $19.99 bracelet at Kohl’s in Rhode Island Mall on Sept. 12. She was released with a summons.

Officer Eric Lima went to the gift shop at Kent Hospital on Sept. 11 to take custody of a New Bedford man accused of switching price tags in the gift shop. Lima reported that the same man, identified as Donald Souza, 50, of 356 Ashley Blvd., was wanted in Warwick for making crank or obscene phone calls. He was also charged with shoplifting.

Officer Nadine Pallini reported the theft of $146.01 worth of meat from the Stop & Shop on Greenwich Avenue on Sept. 16. A loss prevention agent told Pallini she grabbed the shopping basket with the meat from the male suspect but he managed to run away to a gold Chevy Blazer. The number she gave police did not lead to a suspect.

The owner of the Caponhead kiosk in Warwick Mall told police someone grabbed three sports caps, for the NFL, MLB and the NBA, and stuffed them in a bag before fleeing the area without paying for them on Sept. 16. She said the hats were worth $120. She was advised to call the police the next time she sees the man in the area.

DUI AND REFUSAL

Officer John Curley reported he was on a traffic detail around 12 p.m. on Sept. 6 when he clocked a car doing 43 in a posted 25-mile-an-hour zone. He said he followed it and saw it turn into Dolores Court and did not stop for a stop sign at Harmony Court. He said he followed and pulled it over on Hoxsie Avenue.

He said the driver appeared to be extremely disoriented and gave Curley an EBT card and a medical marijuana card before he finally found his license. He said the driver failed the field sobriety test and was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He said an inventory search turned up marijuana and 14 blue pills that were clonazepam, a controlled substance. He was taken to Kent Hospital, where he refused to submit to a chemical test. He was taken to headquarters, where he was processed and charged with DUI, speeding and running a stop sign. Anthony Bucci, 39, of 88 Gansett Ave., Cranston, was held for the bail commissioner.

Officer Curley reported stopping a Jeep because the driver had no seat belt on around 4:56 p.m. on Sept. 8. He said he could smell alcohol on the driver’s breath and asked him to take a field sobriety test. He said the driver failed the test and registered a .127 blood alcohol content on the portable analyzer but refused to take a breath test at headquarters. Edward Gagan, 61, of 728 Greenville Ave. in Johnston, was charged with DUI, refusal and not wearing a seat belt and later released to a sober adult.

Officer Terence McMullin reported an accident near 159 Airport Road around 12:10 a.m. on Sept. 6. He said a woman sitting on the curb was pointed out to him and Capt. Bradford Connor asked him to give her a field sobriety test. Connor said her car hit a flatbed tow truck that was already loaded with a car to be taken to mechanics. He also pointed out the heavy front-end damage to the woman’s car and said she had slurred speech and appeared to be intoxicated. He said she failed the field sobriety test and was taken to headquarters, where she refused to take a breath test. He said a check of her record revealed a prior stop for DUI on April 14 of this year and that she pleaded no contest to it. Debra A. Hammond, 46, of 29 Dolores Ct., Warwick, was charged with DUI, second offense and refusal and then released to a sober adult.

Officer John Curley reported clocking a car at 58 miles per hour on Warwick Avenue around 6 p.m. on Sept. 14. He said he pulled the Dodge pickup truck over and asked the driver to submit to a field sobriety test. Curley said he stopped the field sobriety test after the walk and turn because the driver almost fell over and he feared he would hurt himself. He said the driver registered a .285 blood alcohol level on the portable breath tester but refused to take a test at headquarters. Richard W. White, 29, of 130 Green River Ave., Warwick, was charged with DUI, refusal, speeding and having alcohol in the vehicle while driving. He was later released to a sober adult.

Officer Daniel DiMaio reported he was doing a traffic stop around 2 a.m. on Sept. 10 when a car pulled up next to him on Post Road, put his car in park and started to get out of the car as it stood in the middle of the road. DiMaio said he intercepted the man before he could get out of the car and asked him what he was doing. He said the man told him he needed directions to get to Fall River. He said the driver thought he was in Massachusetts and appeared to be drunk. He said he gave the driver a field sobriety test and he failed it. DiMaio said the driver did not smell of alcohol but was obviously under the influence of something and he was taken to Kent Hospital, where he refused to take a blood test. DiMaio said the driver was complaining about hearing voices and that someone kept calling him an Indian. Under the circumstances, they left Maximillian C. O’Brien, 20, of 28 Quail Trail in Westport, Mass., with the hospital staff for observation. He was charged with DUI and refusal.

Officer John Curley reported yet another detail that led to the arrest of a motorist for speeding on Route 95 around 11:25 p.m. on Sept. 13. He said he clocked the car between 98 and 100 miles per hour before he stopped him. He said the driver smelled of alcohol and had vomit in his lap and on the side of his door. He said the man failed a field sobriety test, refused a preliminary portable breath test and a breath test at headquarters. Sean C. Murtagh, 23, of 50 East Hill Dr., Cranston, was charged with speeding, DUI and refusal and later released to a sober adult.
